MK II - Is this seat covering OEM?

    seats1.jpg

Hi all, this is something that I have wondered about for a long time but never really found a definitive answer. Certainly when I was involved with the club from an area co-ordinator perspective 10+ years ago no one seemed to know, but due to the wonders of the net and a wider audience maybe someone does now I need to refurbish the seats now and if its original or special order or something I want to keep it this way.

The car is a 1977 MK II and the beige seats are half trimmed in a lighter beige velour on the outer edges i.e. all the non basket weave Ambla sections. The edges are piped with dark brown plastic piping. It appears to have been professionally done and all the original LCP Coventry trim stickers are in place underneath. Has anyone ever seen another Stag trimmed like my seats in the picture please, or do you think its just a one off done by a previous owner at some point? I have had the car 23 years, was like it when I bought it and was showing signs of wear back then so my guess it was done fairly on in its life. The dirty marks are from storage from the last few years although the velour is quite worn anyway.

    TIA

    Dave

i don't think your seats are original coverings, stag seats were vinyl, but leather was an option, but know one ever bought

      Hi Dave,

I do like the look of your seats but am as sure as I can be that this must be a post-production retrim.

I worked in a Triumph dealer during most of the time that Stags were on sale and I never ever saw anything like this. Also there's a website around that has pdfs of all Triumph brochures throughout the Stag productn period and a dual-tone is never mentioned.

I've retrimmed my own seats and a job like this wouldn't be too hard for a professional trimmer - although it would have cost a fair bit !

      Cheers

      Julian

Hiya Dave, they may well be ex factory if it was a special order, the seats, though not the materials, look original. Do you have the car's Heritage certificate and ownership history ? If not, they're easy enough to find. Some celebrity owners did get pretty much what they wanted, and it was not publicised. Martin.

Many thanks for the replies! Looks like they are a one off then by the sounds of it, but I think I'll do some digging as somewhere I have a list of all the previous 10 owners from the DVLA from years ago, may be something of interest there. If not its a standard retrim I think

Hi Dave, it's well worth you getting a Heritage certificate from Gaydon, just in case the original owner was "special", the upholstery might then become important in it's original state. Martin.

The word I'm looking for is provenance - you never know

what needs to be done on the seats, is it just the foams or have the covers had there day,you could if you like the covers take them off and get them repaired

Martin - good idea cheers, had forgotten about those. Quick look through the old V5's last night did indeed show that the 2nd owner was a British Film director and the car was registered to a film company so I need to do more digging. Something I should have done back in 1989 when I bought the car but in those days the net was not around for research of course

Dave - The side bolsters are crumbly and the velour is more like kitchen paper now, although the basket weave sections are ntb, drivers seat has a hole in the backrest but the rest is fine, so yes wil give that some thought, thanks.
