I think I can just make out " PAX ROMANA " that makes it at least 2000 years old - definitely Roman.

        Hi

I hope this all makes sense to you?

I have gone through my Lucas reference books for the period 1971/2 and have found reference to your Lucas wiper motor part number 75753E. (Which incidentally cost £18.63 +vat in December 1974).

In my catalogue it does not list any application for this motor, suggesting it was a general replacement for several part numbers, looking at the spares breakdown for this assembly, it lists part numbers for all the major components, but not the gear assembly, obviously this motor was supplied less gear, so that the buyer/garages would need to take the gear from their original unit, and put in the replacement, this was common practice at the time. By adopting this practise it means Lucas did not have to stock as many motors.

Comparing the part number of the Stag wiper (75716) it tells me that it should have 104-degree angle of wipe, 2 speed, and 12volt. There is a difference between the Stag motor, and the one you have, in as far as the parking switches are a different part number, the Stag part number is 54701577, and the motor you have, the part number is given as 54701578, what the difference is I don’t know. Certainly they are both the same family of motors being 16W.

Incidentally the letter on the end of the part number denotes some slight change in the manufacture of the unit, maybe in materials used, but it would not stop the complete unit from being interchanged, for example 75716A or 75716F will interchange.

Obviously there is a difference between 75753, which incidentally was manufactured in the 47th week of 1979, and a Stag wiper motor. Looking at your photos it suggests you have a gear inside, check to see if there is a degree marking on it. If there is not don’t assume they look the same and use it, how the angle of wipe is determined is where the pin that the connecting rod is fitted to is attached to the plate, either closer or further from the centre spindle will alter the angle of wipe, it will probably be different to yours, and of course the parking switch is slightly different. A motor which is suitable for spares if nothing more, and by the way if you do dismantle the motor, ensure you put the yoke back in the same place it was originally, i.e. make sure the line on the yoke lines up with the triangle in the casting, other wise the motor will rotate in the opposite direction to which it is intended causing premature wear, and maybe even effect it’s parking.

        Sorry I have waffled on

Thank Ken ,would explain why it didn't park properly,I've just taken this one out so no problem if it's not the right one and like you say a spare motor at least ,just can't see the point of the plastic sliding cover.

No I don’t recall the reason for the plastic slider, the only thing I can think of, is that some up market cars manufacturers required the wipers to park off screen, to achieve this perhaps the extra movement/clearance was required hence the slider.

No need to apologise Ken, I found it all very interesting, and I haven't even got a problem with my wiper motor (famous last words )

                  Cheers

It might be a type 16W as fitted to RR's

This is a reconditioned part, sold on an exchange basis so a core unit surcharge will apply
