    expantion bottle question

ive noticed that the expanion bottle level does not seem to flow back even if i open the brass filler nut on the radiator and raise the expantion bottle to a higher level than the radiator still no flow back.

Should the coolent flow back if the bottle is raised or do i have a blockage or something else? any advise would be much appreciated thought it would be best to ask before pokeing around with the cooling system.

    many thanks

    Hi Steve,

it will only flow back as it cools, taking the brass filler nut off will let the coolant out, you need to check this cold, the expansion bottle should be about a third full, if you have no temp problems i would just check the level in the bottle only. top up is by way of the brass filler plug when you have a third in the bottle.

it is expansion and contraction of liquid, it contracts as it cools and pulls it back from the expansion bottle, you wont see this happen by the naked eye

    hope this helps

      Hi Steve
If you remove the bottle pressure cap, and the rad filler cap then raise the bottle above the rad then coolant must flow or else there is a blockage. I bet the blockage is in your expansion bottle. Take off the hose and see if it runs out. I found this had happened on a friend's dlolly sprint.

Hi Steve, take the cap off the bottle and try again. If you have even a small air leak, the system is not sealed and will not draw the fluid back, check all your hose connections are tight, and that the hoses are in good nick. It's also worth replacing the pressure cap, 20 psi. cheap enough, and see if you can twist the brass neck on the bottle, if you can, that's the leak. Martin.
