new stag owner and i have problems!!

hi all, i recently purchased a 1972 stag, its had the lumination electronic ignition fitted, i have power to the coil and power coming from the 3 wire connection to distributor but no spark, the wiring has been fiddled with so i'm after a bit of info really,
eg: what coil should be used? 12v?
how to test the voltage of the coil?
what wires go from where to where?
any common faults with this system?
sorry for the long list but as i'm only 23 im new to restoring classics!
    thanks.

hi all!! new to classic cars!

hi all, im 23 and i've just purchased a 1972 stag, its running the lumination electronic ignition, the problem is it looks like someone has played with the wiring and i have to spark, ive fitted a new rotor arm ht leads and dizzy cap. i have power to the coil. power from the coil, power from the lumination pack to the distributor but no spark, what i need to know is should i be using a 12v coil? if so how do test the voltage of the coil?
what wires are used to connect to the coil? and if there are common thing to check/test? thanks vey much!

      Hello Spencer,

Welcome to Stag ownership - fine choice of car and probs to be expected. I am sure that tommorow someone.e will be along with some useful advice but, until then, I will start you off by saying that unless your electrical system really has been changed significantly, you need a 6v coil - i.e. one that is for a ballast situation.

The most common problem with lumenition systems is the three pin plug corroding, look carefully at this first. If the coil is ok then removing the negative lead from the coil while the ignition is on should produce one spark each time the lead is pulled off.
The coil should recieve 8-9 volts through the ballast resistor wire with the ignition on, and this should increaser to 12 volts while the starter motor is turning as there is a seperate circuit bypassing the resistor to help starting

have you confirmed that the distributor is turning? Does the rotor arm point to the outboard coil mounting bolt with the engine at TDC on #2 ?

hi, ive checked the timing and if the rotor arm is turning, all is correct. where would the ballast resistor be located?
so on cranking the engine i should have 12v coming out at the coil lead?
            thanks very much!

hi, yes dizzy is turning and all on timing.
ill check the connector firstly, so should i be getting 12v out of the coil lead when cranking?
also how many wires in total should i have going to the coil? i think all of my wires are white going to the coil.
also is there any way of testing power in the dizzy? cheers for all of your help.

I spoke to luminition and they e mailed over how to test the system , I could maybe get a copy to you.

Very non-technical solution I used when I had a misfiring problem - waving a screwdriver in and out of the optical pickup should generate voltage that changes at the coil - elsewhere too so you can follow a trail - and creates sparks from the coil. Removes a lot of vagaries in proving if the system works at all - or if the problem lies elsewhere.

well today i was having a play, i tested the power at the end of the coil lead and had 12.5 volts, when i placed a piece of card between the contact breaker the voltage only dropped 0.2 volts so im assuming that's the problem, ive found a set of point in my garage so im going to try those tomorrow, do i need to wire the coil up different or do i just remove the the electronic ignition, cheers
