    PDWA leaking

Just wondering if anyone can offer any advice on a persistent problem with the PDWA on my Stag as I can't get the switch housing to stop leaking. I've replaced the seals 3 times now and have even tried using EPDM 008 size O-rings as I found that the overhaul kits from the usual suppliers just don't work. The shuttle bore is in very good condition with no sign of damage and I'm wondering if it's because the original seals are square section and all the replacements are round section. I know that new replacement PDWAs are available but as a Range Rover part I will need to remove my new brake lines and replace the male fittings with different fittings plus the replacements are expensive. Any suggestions for a cure would be gratefully received.

What are you using to seal the treads on the switch with? i used teflon tape and a seal kit from the usual vendors and have no problems. Can you find a spare from a UK supplier ? instead of redoing you brake lines.

I think you will find that they are square as a result of them being squashed in the bore which is how the seal is created. Obviously over time the rubber will harden through age and then loose the ability to create a good seal. I have just changed mine and used some o rings from a large box set that I have. The ones I used were much bigger in section and when I fitted the shuttle it was noticeably tight to get into the housing. If you let me have your address I will gladly pop a few in the post for you to try!

      Regards

If it's leaking at the thread where the switch fits then the seals are shot, it should not have brake fluid in that part of it.

I agree with you there Ian, therefore no need for P.T.F.E. tape as it serves no purpose and indeed you should be able to remove the switch without loss of fluid.

I suspect a number of people who have rebuilt their PDWAs will be unaware that they are leaking, there should be absolutely no fluid in the switch plunger chamber. I notice a slight weap on the end of the switch after overhaul and confirmed the source of the leak by removing the switch and inserting some workshop tissue down the threded hole then applying the brakes.

The original seals are wider and a square section and are definitely different to the round section O-rings. The 008 size o rings supplied in the various rebuild kits I have tried are very tight to insert. Thanks for the offer Paul, did you manage to get hold of EPDM o-rings?
