    Cut off???

Hi All, I took the stag out to work today after a very long time...merrily tootling along on the M40 and found that when I put my foot down to overtake a lorry it very momentarily hesitated... thought nothing of it. After about 10 minutes it just cut off in the slow lane, ignition light on and rev counter still reading the revs... pulled over on the hard shoulder, it started instantly and off I went no more issues.
The petrol was low with the light showing...what could it have been?? any ideas before Stag paranoia consumes me..have to drive back 20 miles after work.

    Cheers
    Sukh.

    Hi Sukh,

were you on an uphill by anychance? the fuel flows into the back of the tank and this could be the cause, also hard acceleration, put some fuel in and try it again, i always keep mine above a quater of a tank. it could be the pump or the fact you could have picked up some crud from the bottom of the tank, i would fill her half full and give her a blast out, see if it happens again

    hope this helps mate

Thanks for the reply Alan..no it was not uphill and I have recently cleaned and sealed the tank so it may rule out the "crud". Yes the fuel pump may be the culprit. I am not sure whether I heard it "tick", should have listened. I have a brand new one so will fit it tomorrow....just in case.

      Cheers.

to be honest i had the same sort of problem, but mine just used to die, i would pull up, turn off, then she would just fire up, eventually it just gave up, took it to wards and they fitted a new pump and hey presto, no more problem.
i couldnt find it as it was intermitant, every time i checked the pump it worked fine, it was only when i was traveling along it would do it.

        all the best with it

Hesitation can often be lack of oil in the dash pots or split diaphragms. (Are you running strommies? I can't remember). Possibly not in this case as it doesn't explain the cutting out. Might be worth looking at though.

Longshot I know but you said recently cleaned and sealed the tank. The breather is clear only if not it will cause a vacume in the tank. Graham

Hi Again, I am running the Twin choke weber..... no issues on the drive home, was putting my foot down and it was pulling like a train, temp at the quater mark.
So...will check the fuel breather and fit the new leccy fuel pump.

Oh yes nearly forgot, nice chap on a massive motor bike, I think it was a Triumph Rocket 3 similar to the one in the pic pulled up next to me and said "nice car mate"
and I in turn said "nice bike", he pointed out my nearside brake light was not working so need to do that as well.
Triumph Stag and triumph bike wow life is full of surprises.

I had the same problem, it would stop for no reason and start straight up again. Turned out to be the luminition electronic ignition. Swapped it for a petronix system and been fine since, Terry

I had a similar fault, tricky to find.

It turned out to be a poor 12v supply to the pump.

                  digital meter showed 12v

                  analogue showed flickery 12v

                  culprit was inertia switch contacts.

Had the same thing in the outside lane of a local dual carriageway whilst giving it the beans as it were, if it stops completely its going to be pump, king lead and/or coil. mine was 90% cured with new fuel pump and last 10% was the other 2 varmints, don't know which as I changed both simultaneously (yes I did spell check that word) and all was restored to harmony

The chap on the rolling road said on Saturday that he had a car with Luminition that would only run once the Luminition module had warmed up. The way he found out was after he had spilt a cup of hot tea on it. After that it got a dose of hot water before every cold start!!!

I've had similar cut-outs three times in the last two years, under varying circumstances. Each time I had to wait 5 minutes or so, and then restarted and carried on as if nothing had happened. Each time I checked the fuel supply at the carbs, and seemed OK. Now I must suspect the Lumenition box, which is only 28 years old!

I am afraid this won't do! Can someone suggest a reliable tried and tested alternative to the Luminition. Please.
Can't have this hanging over my head.... The " I wonder when it will cut off again ". I cannot fault anything else it has to be the Luminition

Got the new Elec fuel pump fitted Saturday, took less then 10 minutes

                          Sukh.

On further thought, has anyone ever heard of anyone who can test the electronic ignition modules? It would be a tragedy to throw money at a problem only to find later that the trouble was caused by a loose connection....
