Contemplating using Tesco own brand multigrade as it's always very cheap in comparison, always been good on my daily runner, now on 168000 miles and my last one did 210000 miles.
I only do what the voices in my wife’s head tell me to do!
Well 120ish miles over the weekend and still not a huge difference but all seems fine. Being hot on Sunday the temperature did go up a bit both water and oil while fast blatt on Motorway but returned to normal on slower roads. Over 4500rpm the pressure did go over 50 though.
Ray who finished his rebuild last year decided he should change his oil after talking about mine so as I bought 10litres he had the second can on his engine he did get a 10psi increase in pressure so was well pleased. Unfortunately after 17miles it dumped the lot on his daughters drive. Closer investigation he found the PO had fitted two oil filter seals. When he changed the oil he removed one seal but didn't notice the other one behind it. He had had a little seap from the bowl that stopped with the new seal but the extra pressure was obviously too much and it let go. Its the sort of thing I would have expected to have done but he should have spotted it.
I never gave it much thought so from day one I went with Castrol GTX 10w 50 also I really have not put many miles on the car then I stumbled on to this topic and on another Stag group in the US found out about the zinc etc.
I spoke with Castrol today and GTX would not be good for flat tappet engines, they recommend Castrol Edge with Snytec 5w 50 it has 1300 ppm zinc. The person I spoke with was very knowledgeable and he knew about flat tappet engines, looks like I need an oil change. Just thought I would share this information.

For several years I used '76 20-50, very good stuff, it just got too expensive over here. Martin.
Good news is i can get Brad Penn 20/50 oil for 3 pounds 60p a quart delivered to my door has about 1300ppm to 1600 ppm zinc or if i want i can get others alternates about the same price. I can see an oil change in my near future.
