    Honda Ad with Jason Button

Saw this during the shortened version of the Monaco Grand Prix. The ad consisted of the 'James Bond' drive out of Monaco and up the hairpin bends with accompanied by a bit of Bond type music. Most of the filming was from the driving seat with the sound of a great exhaust note, and gear changes on the bends very apparent, with blips on the throttle when changing down (Try doing that on an Auto!).

There were only a few glimpses of the car itself, red with a black roof, looked like a Sunbeam Alpine or a Daimler Dart to me. Ends with Jenson posing overlooking Monaco and the Marina in his Honda tee shirt. It all reminded me of the feeling you get in a manual Stag on this sort of road. There is nothing like stirring the gears and alternatively whanging the throttle and standing on the brakes on a hill like that. (accompanied by an eye on the temperature gauge and the Kenlowe Fan light in my Stag!) A great ad, and something you guys with Auto Boxes totally miss out on.

Did anyone see the ad? What was the car?

It was a Honda S600. Very nice car, powered by a DOHC 4 cylinder with 4 carbs if I remember correctly.

Honda Convertible S600 ( Not mine!)

      If you just look at the spec’s and you understand why;
      Some facts about the S600:
      • Engine capacity 606 cc
      • Horse power: 57 at 8500 rpm
      • Top speed: 90 mph
      • Redline: 9,500 RPM
      • Carburetors: 4
      • Convertible weight: 1576 pounds
      • First ā€œmass marketedā€ Honda car
      • 11,284 built between ā€˜64 and ā€˜66

      This then? 606cc! Producing 57BHP!

      It sounded good

I don't know why your so suprised at the power of this Honda after all the dominate the world of motorcycle racing and have done for 60 years.

IMHO Honda make the best 4 stroke engines on the planet today & Alfa Romeo make probably the most soulful V6 in the world (Twin Spark 24V Yummy).

However none of them sound as good as a Stag V8 in tune on song going through a long tunnel!

The sound track didn't sound like 660cc's to me, it was too throaty. And, I don't ever recall Honda Bikes on the race track back in my yoof in the 50's and early 60's, except some little ones.It was all Manx Nortons, Goldies and Matchless's. Last years Goodwood Revival bought it all flooding back. The latest issue of Classic Car had an article posing the question of whether the 60's or the 90's were the golden years of saloon car racing. I never watched it in the 90's, so for me the brutal Galaxy vs Mini, and the Jags is it. The Revival recreated it perfectly except for Tiff Needel in his BMW (there were never BMW's) - everybody in the crowd punched the air when he blew up at Woodcote and the Merc was last. The only recollection of Alfa's is when my pal braked hard in his and the headlight, perforated with rust popped out and dangled on the wires.

Sorry, butI just can'tget excited about any foreign cars or bikes although I have owned a few.

On that basis the stag should produce 285bhp if it was as efficient as the Honda.

8 carbs and 9500rpm might be asking a bit too much though:shock:

              Steve,
You'd have to have 4 valves per cylinder and a better exhaust breathing to get that, and probably stronger components, better cooling and lubrication too. Easier to achieve on a smaller engine with chunky parts for its size. In my yoof I used to enjoy breathing on old engines like that, but I wouldn't dare on the fragile Stag power plant.
