    Supergill Radiator

Someone has brought to my attention that the filler neck on his HRS Supergill radiator is much higher than normal. This means that if he fits an elbow for a header tank connection he is concerned there may not be sufficient space to do so.

    Has anyone else noticed this?

I've just bought the header tank kit and was wondering the exact same thing. By my reckoning, if I use the elbow connection it will hit the bonnet when closed as it will be about 5mm higher. The existing brass cap has already dented the sound pad as it is.

When I bought this stag I was told that the radiator has been recored and don't think its a supergill, but obviously have the same potential problem. I was considering using the tee connection method instead. Have there been problems with this connection method?

No there have been no problems until somone mentioned the Supergill but has not actually tried it yet.

My radiator boss measures 20mm above the panel, and the elbow easily fits without even a mark in the bonnet pad.

No problem putting a t-piece in the top hose if you haven't room for the elbow. I've been running a header tank this way for several years now.

On my car, which is fitted with radiator supplied by Paddocks, the neck is approximately 7cm (approximately 3cm’s above the panel). With the elbow fitted the total height from the top of the radiator to the top of the elbow is 10cm.

After fitting and when I was checking the bonnet closed ok I noticed the elbow was marking the insulation panel so I cut a piece out of the insulation panel and don’t have any problems.

I would have thought that any neck longer than 7cm may present a problem if an elbow is fitted.

On the subject of radiators and header tanks the Paddocks radiator and Vmads header tank kit are highly recommended.

The neck on my radiator is about 7.5cm and with the elbow connected the bonnet will not close. Need to buy a tee piece for the connection or maybe check if the radiator is standing on extra thick washers? I'll find out when I take it out for a good flush.

How can you tell if it s a supergill or not?

Mine is 9cm above the radiator and the elbow has made its own way through the insulation, so no cutting required

My opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Fitted the header with a T piece today and found the cap on the header tank interfering with the bonnet. I've cut the sound pad and the bonnet closes now. Is this normal or have I got a strangely low bonnet?

I do not believe there is a hard or fast way to tell if you have a HRS Supergill, although going from a thread on Club Triumph Hart's radiators have a louvred gill arrangement (like a modern radiator) with 4 cores present.

The Supergill radiator I acquired from another specialist seems to be a staggered 3 core gill and tube arrangement, although some say his arrangement could be said to be a four core radiator.
