Hi, any good tips / advice on cleaning the wood veneer, dash and gear lever area? It's not peeling but a little faded but prob just needs a good polish with something that will 'feed' old wood?
You need to strip the panels out of the car to effectively treat them but this could be done one at a time. Take wire wool, going from coarse to fine and gently remove the old lacquer until the wood is revealed, the longer you take and the more gentle you are, the better the results. Once the wood is clear, sand with very fine sandpaper, clean with meths, not too much, and apply new coats of lacquer, building up a reasonable depth of coat. Use very fine sandpaper to rub down as required, removing dust with meths.
If you're going down this route, try the nearside vent piece first, least noticeable & quickest done.
John.
i have reveenered quite a few now, if you look at my profile you will see a burr walnut one i completed, if you want to polish them up then use t-cut, what sort of finish do you want? wire wool will leave you with a satin finish whereas t-cut will gloss them, and as Martin has said, mr sheen works very well as a finishing touch.
As a quick clean up, i would t-cut in situ, dab a small amount on a cotton duster and polish to the desired shine, then wipe and polish with a cotton duster and Mr sheen it later.
Thanks everyone for the advice, only had my Stag now a couple of days and really impressed with SOC forum(s). Prob will keep asking dense newbie questions for a while!!
