It depends. I originally intended to follow in LesM's footsteps and build my own conversion (not to compete with anyone, just for myself) . Les was very helpful with advice and info and I got as far as sourcing a box, but it dawned on me that I lacked the facilities and quite possibly the expertise to see it through. I would've had to farm the machining out and had the car off the road for sometime with no guarentee of success.
So on balance for me buying the kit was the better option.

        thanks
If i can source the bits for around a £1000 not including the box I will go for it, cost of engine rebuild has to be priority

on the move with this now

                acquired todayJaguar XJ40 3.2 automatic gearbox 1993 zf 4 hp 22

I think i need torque converter machined to fit stag crank

flex plate drilled to suit the new torque converter

type 35 bell housing ( got that already)
adapter plate between jag box and bell housing , i will be getting a machine shop to do this
adapt the gearbox mounts to suit
                type 65 propshaft
                means of attaching speedo cable?
                oil cooler pipes to suit

                think thats it

Alan can't you make up an electronic speedo that would run of a sensor by the propshaft
                    cheers Steve

Hi Ross. I am a newkid on the stag block , I have owned my stag only since June this year. I felt the only way to to go had to be the auto. My theory behind this was partly to enjoy roof down arm out cruising whilst listening to that glorious relaxed V8 soundtrack and also Im a lazy git. I drive my everyday car to keep my arm wobbling a silly stick about. Probably too late now and your decision is made, but whichever way you go ,enjoy it and welcome aboard

If you need any more info on how it all fit's together, I will try to answer any questions you have. Are you rebuilding the box before you fit it. If so then I can recomend http://www.jpat.co.uk/ they are very helpful and do hold a good stock of spares.

                        Les.

                          hi
gearbox is due to be with me early next week, I made a mistake in previous post it is xjs 3.6 that has 60.000 miles on the clock.(don't know if that model is lock down converter or not)
yes I will rebuild the gearbox and thanks for the heads up on the parts.
                          from the info I have;
                          I need to
1 get a machine shop to turn the torque converter nose to fit the stag crank
2 drill the flex plate to take the new converter
3 utilize the bw 35 bell housiing that I have already
                          4 acquire bw 65 propshaft
5 make up.scrounge borrow or buy adapter plate for the bw 35 bell housing to jag box(that might already be sorted via another source)
6 adapt rear mounting to suit( heard that herald mounts fit)
7 fit new oil cooler pipes to suit existing pipes
8 adapt the jag speedo transducer with angle drive to suit cable, or convert my speedo to electronic
anything else ? or tips gratefully received

                          alan

                            Alan

Item 5 - Two way's to do this a) as per Alan Thomas has done and make a new adapter plate and use the original 5/16" mounting bolts to hold the bellhousing on. b) the way I did it was to just cut down the jag bellhousing to accept the b/w35 housing and use the original 6 x 10mm bolts that hold the jag housing on.

item 8 - the only 4hp22 that is fitted with a speedo drive as far as I know is the sherpa van, none of the Jag/bmw have ever fitted a speedo drive in the gearbox they fit them to the diff. I managed to fit the b/w35 speedo in the last one that I did, but you need a reversing converter ( I made mine ) you can buy them but the last time I checked they were approx £ 80/85 + vat each.

If you get a plate made up don't get one to thick as this will effect the size of spacers required ( you will need thicker one's ) to get the correct endfloat on the torque converter

You should be OK with the output flange if you have a Jag box as the stag prop fit's.

                            Les.

Thanks. I haven't bought a Stag yet, I have to sell the TR6 to liberate funds first, so I haven't got around to test driving any autos.
