    Carburettor tuning/setting up in Yorkshire?

Hi all, just been for a jaunt out covering about 220miles. Our Stag ran perfectly, never missed a beat. Bit concerned at only getting around 15mpg, the carbs are reconditioned but think they may need a good tune/setting up? Can anyone recommend in Yorkshire prefably West Yorkshire area please?

Just wondering if the brakes are binding? Ignition timing is correct at all revs? Engine is not running too cool? All these could affect fuel consumption.

      Hi Chris,

Hmm food for thought....Not sure about the brakes or the ignition timings etc, however the engine does seem to run rather cool? If you imagine say guage reading 11 o clock?????

The engine is a new build having done approx 2000 miles upto press, built by a well know stag engine builder? The tax is due end sept so I planned on flushing the coolant out and replacing the coolant, while I take it off the road over winter but that will give me chance to check thermostat etc

I wouldn't have thought 11 o'clock on the gauge was running cool (between E and M on MK2)?

Does your gauge look like the item in the bottom left of the gauge binnacle below?

If the car is overcooling (11 o Clock sounds fine) that would not help matters.

What type of roads did you drive on? Does the car smell quite rich or of petrol? As others have said it could be a brake issue (binding brakes etc.), ignition problem (vacuum advance not working would not help matters) or something else (a fuel leak etc.).

If someone has reconditioned your carbs then they should be OK. It depends on who did the job. Check that the base of the needles are level with the the base of the pistons, they are held in by a grub screw. Then check that the diaphragms are not punctured. Open to top of the carbs and check the level of the damper oil. Any further tuning, which usually is adjusting the needles, has to be carried out by a special tool inserted in the top of the carbs.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Firstly I have to apologise, the Temp guage does in fact look the same as in the image and says temp on it. So apologies there, I'll put that one down to having a bald moment! The needle only just passes the T so to speak during normal driving? Its not been anywhere near the centre etc? I've booked into a classic tuning specialist called IK Classics for a once over! Thanks again

That will probably explain why the fuel consumption is not good.
