    Clutch,regular or uprated.

Gentlemen, may I prevail upon you again for some further info., Paddocks are offering two clutch assemblies, regular or an upgraded version. One comes with standard dimension parts and heavy duty bearing for £105+V,the other has a different clutch body(giving more clearance) again with a superior bearing for£190+V.....have any of you any experience of the uprated clutch and is it worth the extra cost?

    Thanks,Andrew.

Fitted a few this year - all but one was the uprated Paddocks one, and no problems.... Comes with everything you need - spigot bush, cross shaft bushes and taper bolt, clutch bolts, fork pins and even a couple of dowel bolts for the Bell housing.

It is more expensive, but works well, and all the bits you need are there... Will definitely be what I recommend people to get when they want me to change one...

Andrew, I had a thread going a couple of months ago with a gearbox/clutch problem. Russ advised the uprated Paddocks kit to me which I purchased and although seemingly dearer, when you take into consideration that there are lots of extras compared to standard kits, it's good value.
I can't comment on the fitting as it's still on the bench. Taking the box out revealed major rust in front chassis legs, front floor and passenger outriggers so I've been slowly carving an almost continuous groove from the tunnel to the rear wheel arch...
Hopefully get the box and clutch back in, this month...
      Cheers Johny

I fitted a modified clutch with the flat bearing, squealed like a banshee,When I checked the fit of everthing after removing it all again it turned out the bearing was too big for the coverplate fingers and was only bearing on half the knuckles which was causing a line to be cut into the cover fingers.
I'll load a picture later to show you what I mean.

        Cheers Steve

Steve. I'm not surprised it caused you grief. The flat faced release bearings are designed to work with clutch covers fitted with a corresponding flat metal ring attached to the ends of the fingers. The "Original" Stag cover has just the fingers, sometimes raised at their ends, and needs a release bearing with a rounded profile to roll across the fingers as they are depressed. Mike.

Mike the cover was the correct type with a bent back fingers its just that the ID of the bearing was too big as you can see in the photo it cut a groove in the fingers within 1000 miles.Clutch bearing 001.jpgClutch bearing 003.jpgThe small brown ring on the inner diameter of the bearing is all that made contact with the fingers.I should have checked the fit but as I paid £200 for an engineered solution I assumed it would work, never assume.

Nasty one, Steve. As you say, these days, never assume! Were you able to find a bearing that would work against that design of cover? I fitted one that is manufactured to fit the Ferguson TE tractor range to my Stag some years ago now. As you can imagine it is extremely robust, fitted perfectly, and has never given any trouble! Mike.

Mike It was all part of the kit so should all have worked together .i didn't send it back but will use the pressure plate and friction plate and think I have found a suitable hydraulic concentric slave cylinder to go with it ,will find out in a few weeks.

                    Cheers Steve

                      Interesting to hear that cross-application

Triumph used to make Ferguson tractors under licence but IIRC they sold out that operation to Massey in the mid 1950's to fund a large car plant expansion. Triumph took some of their Ferguson design knowledge for their 2000/2500 gearbox which was then adapted for the Stag, I think their maybe some Ferguson influence in their 4 & 6 cylinder engines too

Steve. I will be very interested to hear if you find a concentric cylinder that can be made to fit without too much modification to the car. I think it was Moss that developed one some time ago for the TR range-very expensive-but not for the Stag. If you come up with something affordable that works I think you will be kept very busy! Mike.

I will be interested to hear the results of this. I have got the modified kit in mine that squeals when the clutch is released, and is ok when the clutch is depressed. It has been doing this for the best part of 15,000 miles now. It isn't a horrendous noise and for the time being I would rather live with it than consider splitting the 'box and engine, but I can't imagine that it will last forever!

Mike this guy got it to work with a Tilton bearing http://club.triumph.org.uk/cgi-bin/f...?m-1275232760/ I'm hoping to do it with a cheaper alterative.
