If Fitting new seats with integrated airbag does the airbag need to be disabled?
Is the airbag not active if not connected via the seat control wiring.
Regards John
i would of thought that the air bag is a bomb waiting to be triggered ! so i would asume that it must be disabled if it is not to be used.bit like having an old ww2 grenade buried in your allottment you dont know until you dig about then.....................................

Beautiful early mk1 white tv8 mod? MGB GT and now looking for another V8
But like all explosives it needs a trigger. I don't know and you should obviously get expert advice but I would be surprised if it could go off without an electric pulse?

Paul - 3 projects, 1 breaker - garage built and housing 2 white Stags. One runs, one doesn't
A few years ago, some Astras were recalled for just that reason. I wouldn't be happy knowing there is an explosive charge two inches from my chest, whatever the theorists say !
There are manufactures procedures that should be followed to remove and refit, once removed HSE regulations for storage dictate that they are kept in a blast proof unit (Locker / Vault) to contain them if they detonate.
Your choice what you do really
Ian.

That's true Wilf, but I still don't like them and have no choice. At least they are recent and in a known condition. Also most owners don't seem to be aware that they should be changed at about ten years, I wonder why ?
John, do get them disabled by an expert, DIY is bloody dangerous. Martin.

I once tried setting one off in a set of seats I replaced; 12v across the bag did diddly squat. Shame as I was looking forward to the "bang". I assume it needs some form of pulse sequence
After teasing out some answers from a Toyota mechanic ,
With trigger point removed airbag won't ignite as it generally needs two triggers from the plc controller.
Seats with integrated stalks holders on the seat, for seat belt will have a pre tensioner to trigger airbag this will normally give the combined pulses.
This will usually be a mechanical and electrical trigger to plc, combined to activate the airbag.
if the harness is unplugged the plc trigger is removed and original seat belt arrangement should always be kept, by doing so the seat belt trigger is also removed.
I just wish that cat had not peed and made **** of my fiat coupe seats.
There is a massive amount of seats to choose from but all the good ones I have seen have airbags fitted.

I was going to say that you should not need to as long as they come from the same type and 'phase' of car. Or at least I did not need to in my daily when I switched the seats from Alcantara seats to full leather items (both seats had airbags in mind you). I did however disconnect the battery for an hour before I touched the seats.
