Overdrive problem, She knows you know

Took the Stag out last night everything worked fine. This morning I find that the overdrive is not working. Could this be because I am selling the Stag and have a prospective buyer coming tomorrow.
The fuse is OK and there is power to the switch and continuity in the switch. The Haynes manual shows only the gearbox switch between the switch and solenoid. There is no power at the solenoid.
I thought that there was a relay in the system, am I right? if not it looks like the switch which I presume is on top of the gearbox.
    All suggestions greatly appreciated.

I assume the haynes wiring diagram is the same as the one here:

If it all looks OK I would suggest checking the continuity of the wire from the switch down the gear leaver to the solenoid. It gets flexed a lot and is prone to breaking. Don't forget there is a inhibit switch on the gearbox to stop engagement of the overdrive when reverse is selected, check there is power to this as well.

'A' types have a relay, 'J' types do not - although I reckon they should as the solenoid in-rush current is too much for the poor little gearknob switch!

      Cheers,

Thanks Roger & Mike. I have checked the wire from the switch down the gear leaver and that is OK. I was thinking of the TR3A gearbox and that would be an 'A type. Will check out the reversing switch.

Actually, the inhibit switch only allows engagement in 3rd and 4th, rather than inhibit in any other gear(s).

Using the circuit, just try and trace it through, checking the voltages as you go. The culprit should soon show itself!

          Cheers,
          Mike.

Just spent the evening crawling in and out of the Stag. It looks like the overdrive solenoid. Is it worthwhile trying to free the piston or should I just buy a new one £117 inc VAT. Or is there an alternative?

Peter, isn't it blatantly obvious? She's trying to tell you not to sell her. Go on, keep the old girl. You know you really want to .

Spent Sunday afternoon checking out the system and it now works. I can only put it down to gremlins. Various connections checked and tightened. The fuse was changed as the old one was a bit suspect but I cannot say for definite what it was. Thanks everybody for your help & advice.
