Alternator Wiring, whats the small lead/single terminal for?

So basically, the alternator on our stag was failing, so we went to a local alternator specialist with the old one and bought a new one.

At the time of purchase we compared the old and new, the old one used one large multi plug (contained two large wires and one small wire) and then a seperate single small wire (brown I think) with a spade terminal on the end. The new alternator does not have this single wire.
The chap in the shop took the cover off the old and said that this connection was not needed, just to delete the wire.

Our question is, is this correct?

We've fitted the alternator, with an old battery so we could get it running. It runs fine and registers voltage, the battery doesn't increase in charge (the battery could be duff though) therefore after running the car for 20 mins we still had to jump it.

And then what does the rev counter read from? Either the rev counters reading wrongly or the cars running differently (hasn't been started in a number of months).

The cars a 76 with the original engine and wiring.

Any help would be much appreciated, we can take the alternator back if we need a different one.

    Cheers!

I'm ok doing anything with the wiring on my car but the alternator remains a bit of a mystery to me.

I also bought a new alternator a couple of years ago and was told exactly the same as you. I left the wire disconnected and, after a year of satisfactory operation, cut it off for neatness.

The rev counter is fed from a wire (slate/white IIRC) on the coil.

    Cheers
