    speedo wobble

part of this winters programme of hostilities will be replacing the speedo cable to try and stop the "10mph wobble" can you get at the gearbox end if the car is on jacks and stands,or is it a god I wish I'd never started this bloody job sort of thing ?

Peter, not saying it is, but I would take teh cable off the speedo and run some thin oil down the cable. It maybe that there is a dry spot that is dragging and it may cure it. Wont cost you anything.

i agree with Andrew, i had the wobble as you have, never did anything about it and it snapped, ended up fitting a new cable, easy enough if your cable is intact, undo from the clock, pull out the old one and slide a new one in, greased of course, i had to take all mine off just to get to the broken part, easy enough job though.

      hope this helps

Not the worst job to do by far - depends which gearbox as to exactly how easy it is to get to the drive unit on the gearbox - it will become much more interesting if the cable breaks and an end is stuck in either g/box or speedo. Incidentally there used to be different cables for different boxes (different lengths) but now one (the longest) tends to be supplied, you just need to route it to use up the length.

            Peter.
had some what the same the spedo was sort of OK then the cable snapped near the clutch area so replace the whole cable and ended up with the wobble. when I had the gearbox and engine out I had a good look at the angle drive all appeared to be OK bit grubby so cleaned and put back also the new spedo cable I had bought I was a bit suspicions of so bought one from Peter at LD, after the rebuild the test run and .... yes the spedo still wobbled so replaced the angle drive and now all is OK . Not saying you have the same problem but please bear in mind that it could be the drive.
As for getting the old speedo cable off the angle drive under the car you just need patience and plenty of it!!
            mines an A type o/d.

thanks for all your replies guys, think I'll try the simplest first and lubricate the existing cable, followed by a new one if no joy

Quite true Peter, but Peter at LD Parts has the full range on offer......No connection, etc.
