    Which prop shaft?

Gents may I one again prevail upon your extensive knowledge....

I now have my MOD prop. shaft in bits and have noticed at the diff. end of it, there is a rubber sleeve between the inner and outer tubes, which is perished to approx 15mm inside.

Questions:Is the rubber to be replaced?,Does it matter if it is left as is?,Can ordinary mortals do this task? Or is it worth buying the new CV joint type?

I've aquired new UJ's for my existing prop.shaft and would like to reuse it.....so how important is the rubber sleeve?

I look forward to your thoughts,

    Andrew.

I do not belive that type is now avalible now they are straight tubes. i belive the rubber was a shock absorber.

      Andrew,
my understanding is the rubber dampner type are no longer available but I could be wrong they make a solid type LD parts has them as do most of the suppliers I have the dampner type on my car right now you may be able to have it welded up and balanced but then it would be a cost factor old repaired versus a new of the shelf.
The sleeve acts as a vibration dampner I believe.

      cheers Stuart

What they said - just replaced my own propshaft with rubber sleeve with a solid one and all vibes are banished.
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

I have an original type prop shaft on the Stag but I have used a solid type on a Triumph 2000 which vibrated previously. The result was a very smooth drive with no vibration at all... so I will be using a solid one on the Stag when the time comes too. I don't know if the CV joint type are best though, but I like the idea of two less universal joints!

Drive a Stag every day... it's wonderful!

I ended up using a Rover SD1 propshaft with cv joints, bought dirt cheap from Rimmers years ago, one end fitted ok but I had to redrill the gearbox flange as the holes were spaced differently

Just looked at Rimmers website, SD1 propshafts are £60 including VAT, Stag CV ones are £150, if the prop on my project car is no good I will be fitting another SD1 item, I can drill 4 holes for £90
