    Early Airbox

Out of interest, I hardly seen any early MK1 air box that have what looks the two trumpets sticky out the front. Why is this, did they stop it during the MK1 models adpting the MK2 airbox?

They stopped building cars with the early airboxes in late 1971.

And do you know if the early cars with the later air box came with the flexible air tube to take air from the above the exhaust manifold? Just wondering if I should be trying to locate one or is the absence of on one in keeping with the vintage of my car (early 1972).

        Thanks Brian

Early 1972 should have the Mk2 type airbox complete with flexi-pipe and the heat collector on the LH exhaust manifold.

You may have either Mk1 or Mk2 inlet manifold as the changeover to full Mk2 system wasn't immediate.

Thanks Dave. It's a Mk2 inlet manifold and I was thinking that had been swapped, but maybe not. Just have a missing flex-pipe then as the heat collector is present.

Many were swapped when mk2 engines got fitted.

Also many mk1 airboxes rotted & got replaced with mk2.

I saw a few mk1 airboxes for sale that were quite rusty which tells the same tale.

I am running a MK1 it has the Mk2 box but I left out the hot air tube and the collector that goes onto the exhaust my car runs just fine without it,

                  Stuart,

I may be wrong, but the average temperatures at Huntington Beach, Ca. may be a bit higher than in Chester, UK.......
