    Playing with LED's

John ,(KOY) gave me some led's for the dash last year (thanks John),having played around with an old revcounter and the green ones John gave me I decided to get some blue ones (my interior is all blue) and have started to swap the lights over.one pic shows the revcounter with green LED's and the other is of my dash, believe it or not the rev counter with the old bulb is on next to the 2 blue gauges but my camera cant pick it out cos its soo dim hench the change over.
I will also add a strip shining up at the heater controls from the black plastic trim by the window switches.
NB these are strips of led's not bulb types

Alan ,its more to do with the fact that with the blue ones i have fitted the strip with just 3 led's between the inner and outer black discs so the light hasnt got to get throught the very small gap around the outside edge(the are in front of the needle).I tried a strip with 9 led's right around the can at the back to start with and it wasnt anywhere near as good.

          Cheers Steve

            Hi Steve,

            Looking good

Just one word of warning re LED lights shining up onto the heater controls - I've done exactly what you're describing, although with green LEDs. I used just 3 lights but it was far too bright and distracting. I've temporarily covered the outer two but, even with one, it's still very bright and it reflects off the windscreen

A little bit more experimenting is called for - when I find the time.

            Cheers

                Hi Julian

Extract from an old thread - but if you fit a LED dimmer it works a treat as i fitted the LED strip and with the dimmer you can control it's brightness.

                Hope this helps

Just picking up on this thread as i have just finished fitting Green Inverted LED bulbs to my dash clocks (The inverted type gives a wider light angle) with a LED dimmer - just had to make a small modification and got the original dimmer to operate the electronics.

Must admit they make a big difference

£4.99 from ebay for the dimmer
                http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2609928812...84.m1497.l2649

and the bulbs were £4.80 also from ebay

                http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1903759746...84.m1497.l2649

Feeling as everything fitted and nothing fell off and as a bonus the car started after i had been fiddling and just finished a great run out.

                  Steve.
I have fitted LED's to all of my instruments I just went for white (see my albums) . I have fitted red LEDs that were in a shrouded housing and they are in the up-stand of the plastic joint just in front of the gear leaver and shine on to the heater controls looks good but.... the tray in front is a convenient point to put all sorts of rubbish so they dont work that well.
I was thinking of fitting some to either inside the rear view mirror or on the back of the mirror so that they shine down on to the centre consul as per Audi and Merc etc.
let me know if you need info on the dimmer it was reasonably easy to modify /make as LED's wont work off of the old dimmer control.
                  All the best

                  Paul

Managed to order the dimmer but the link to the LED's does not work. As there are so many Strip LEDS on EBay, wonder if you could provide an updated link to the type of LED's used with this dimmer.

Can you also tell me what is the modification to get the original dimmer to work as mentioned in the post

Hi Julian, this might sound daft but it does work, sit in the car in the dark, with a cloth, and a touch up pot of matt black, touch up the LEDs, wiping and repeating, you'll get the level you want, the LEDs are cold so won't affect the paint. Martin.

                          Hi Steve,
They look great; and I'd like to fit some to my car.
Do you have the name of the supplier?
                          Cheers,

Thanks Frank. These are the ones I got http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2510583423...84.m1439.l2648
However I thought it would be good to have waterproof ones as they are about the same price but they do come out quite a bit fatter than the none waterproof ones so those are the ones I would buy if I were you they will be easier to fit. There are many on ebay.

                            Cheers Steve

Got the speedo and rev counter done today, may need to look at brightening the revcounter a bit more somehow but still 10 times brighter than it was.I am using BEC plug and sockets for the connections.
