Were Triumph not good with fractions?

Just noticed the fuel gauge is 1/2 and then 4/4 ?? why not 2/4 and then 4/4 or 1/2 and then 2/2

Has anyone else ever noticed this? You may have started something Steve, as lots of us go to the garage to read the dials.

        Well I'll be...
Also, has anyone ever noticed the rare occasion when a white pointy thing lays adjacent to this marking?

Obviously there were no mathematicians at Smiths.

Or VDO it seems (I guess at least the fractions were consistent!) . Why manufacturers did it back then Lord knows. Maybe they thought it would confuse owners it the fractions were correctly displayed:

Why have UK cars always had and still have KMH within the MPH on the dial. All the cars I have seen outside the UK only have KMH, I assume they never drive in the UK?

              No doubt someone will know.

My Sunbeam has the fuel markings in gallons and litres. Now that is more useful than fractions.

BUT my Audi has 1/2 and 1/1; just as bad as the stag.

I think its more to do with Smiths, the gauge makers (mostly), and their evaluation of the cars' makers' customers!

I suspect it is some underhand subterfuge by the French or the EEC to soften up those who still use miles and ultimately convert them to using the metric system - though using the hour is perhaps a sign that they haven't completely thought it through

The Stag with its 25-50-75- etc KM/H markings is a bit of a pain in NZ - ok for in town (50) but a bit of a guess in the numerous 60, 70 and 80 zones. Though at least I haven't seen a LSZ (limited speed zone) sign around here for a while.

                    John.
