    Ignition barrel

    Quick question

    My Father has a Triumph 2000 and they have the same ignition barrel set up as the Stag, so I understand

    His car was at a workshop for months and when it came back, he has been having problems with the key and turning it. As in the Stag, you insert the key and just turn it and when you turn the engine off, you turn the key the other way and the push the key in and then pull it out

    To start the car, he now has to push the key hard in and turn it and it is making intermitant conections, so in other words a pain the ar*e.

    My question is, is this key barrel or the lock mechanism?

    Any advice greatly appreciated

    i could be wrong Andrew, but i think you could find it is the plastic plug on the bottom of the barrel, take it off and try it with a screwdriver, they do wear over time to be honest, it may be a little loose, if this is the case then it will not turn the plastic plug enough to make contact and start her up.

      Had the same prob with mine it turned out to be the end bit with the wires in it, the po had tied it all together with ties so it keep moving and loosing contact

        Thanks Guys. So, If I remember, isnt the lock heald in by a small or two small scews to be able to get it out?

            Is the plastic part regarded as the steering lock assembly in other words, can I buy this part separately if failed?

                  Just got one off ebay (robsport),wires are about 4" shorter than the original ,remember reading on one of the main suppliers sites something about this, that they would have to be routed differently ,cant see how I can gain that much ,not impressed.

                    pain in the arse,refitted the original after some careful soldering

                        No I haven't told them,I was half expecting it as I had read about it and assume they all come from the same place.i have now managed to connect it and it works at the moment ,just hope it cures my intermittent non starter issue.there were a lot of crimps joining lots of brakes in the cables on the old one where immobilisers had been fitted and the inside of the switch had seen better days so I think it was worth swapping it rather than trying to repair the old one.

                            OK, have now taken the electrical end off the igntion barrel and the plastic hole where the metal engages is in perfect condition. With the switch off the end, when inserting the key, it just doesnt feel right and will not turn properly.

                            At the moment, I have put lots of WD40 in the key barrel in case its a lubrication problem

                            What actually goes wrong with ignition units? I ask this as there seems to be a shortage of them and members were talking about recon ones. Is there something else that breaks in them other than then plastic engagement hole on the switch end?

                            If oil doesnt work, is it just a case of a new barrel and key. As I mentioned, the car was at a workshop for months and was absolutley fine when it went in. We are now wondering if someone tried to pinch the car and in doing so, damaged the lock mechanism.

                            I cant see any broken down images of the set up anywhere

                            Any advice much appreciated

                              I havn't had one in bits, but iam sure that inside there are small ball bearings in between metal plates, iam sure someone on here will know.
