    Radiator Flush

Anyone used Holts Speedflush recently? i used this today & what came out with the coolant was a jelly like substance, like frogspawn!!! I have used cooling system flushes several times in the past & never seen this before. i have removed the block plugs (including the evil left hand side) & fully flushed but seems odd.

If you hear a noise something like ribbit ribbit, try some pesticide.

    I'll get me coat now.

Normally this is a reaction that takes place between modern antifreeze (OAT) and the original type (IAT) I believe there is a neutralizing flush you can buy (Peter from LD's told me about it at the ND) but not sure who supplies it.

I thought this thread would spawn some follow up attempts at humour and I was knot wrong.

                Hi Steve,

And now for another serious answer.

Back when I first got my car, and because of the worries about the cooling system, I took my rad out to flush it - when I turned it upside down I could hear an odd noise of something solid(ish) moving round

This sludgy lump, and several smaller ones, came out

I think Ian's suggestion may well be right and so I'm glad I gave my system a really thorough flushing - I used Holts 2 stage flush.

I'm sure you won't welcome me saying this but, from my experience, I think I'd be tempted to take your rad out to ensure a complete flush - no amount of water pressure when the rad was still in the car would have shifted that lump and it didn't even want to break up readily

                Good luck.

                Cheers

                Julian

Thanks Julian. Mabe that should be on the front cover of next months mag as a warning to all!
The engine has been given a half hour back flush with a hose, block plugs in & out, the rad is getting a professional flush as i am having a drain cock fitted along with a couple of pipe stubs for a header tank. i think the last time the system was drained (without removing the block plugs) OAT was used so Ian may have hit the nail on the head. Once the header tank is installed i will test everything with plain water & if all is ok, drain & refill & add 50% Bluecol.

Hi Steve, just as a foot note. There is nothing wrong with putting OAT in a Stag, this will be/has been debated by some but my car has run on it for over 4 years now and there are a few others on here who also do the same without issue, the only rule is it doesn't mix well with IAT.

At the end of the day it's personal choice.

                    Ian.
