    Painting a grill

Has anyone tried to freshen up their front grill by painting it, looks like a sod to mask and prep given the silver leading edge.

Normal metal primer and stain black paint?

Might be worth a pop though

      Hi Gary,

I've done it 2 ways. The first time, a few years ago now, I masked it up and sprayed it. Recently I have done another for fitting to this Stag sometime next year. I did that by spraying then wiping the edge clean with a rag before it dried.

Used etch primer in the bare alloy then satin black.

I resprayed mine a couple of years ago in matt black with areosols ( and the same to you) Masking was a tedious but if you mask the chrome and then run a sharp stanley down where the chrome meets the paint then peel off the xcess tape and after it's all painted do the same again so that you don't pull off any new paint with the tape. Look's fine up to now Graham

as above plus, completely strip the old paint then fill any oxidation damage with a stopper/filler or it will look crap when then paint goes on.You can mask the edge as stated then finish off with 0000 gauge wire wool on the leading edge to restore that nice blended look. take your time and you will be rewarded, rush it and you'll wonder why you bothered

Just a brief word, after the Nitro-Mors and masking, paint it with Bilt Hamber etch/weld through primer, I've tried a few and that's the only one I found that sticks properly to anodised aluminium. Martin.

This is how I understand a local specialist does it. Trying it on mine it seemed to do the trick very nicely I must say .

If wiping with rag be carefull not to wipe satin paint back to far and there fore exposing the primer?

Had a couple of hours rubbing masking and painting last night, need another couple of hours to fix the badge holder tonight! And can't believe how bad the headlight bowls are, no wonder the lights are grim.

I took another approach by spraying the whole thing, then polishing back the edges rather than masking them all. Then sprayed on some lacquer to protect the polished aluminium. I admit is was done in a bit of a hurry as I was running out of time before the wedding!

                      Cheers,
                      Mike.

Well it's all done and if I say so myself looking rather splendid

Did nothing unusual, rubbed down, masked off, primer and topcoat - enamel satin black

Next little job, get some air out of the top demisters!
