    Rover V8 ECU temp sender

    Hi All

Not for the old Stag but for my daily driver Range Rover Classic 3.9 I am having some bother that the RV8 chaps might just be able to help with
I need help please because rupertthestag doesn't like the dark.

Idle speed has been erratic for ages now and it leaks oil from the top end so on Saturday I thought 1/2 day replace rover cover gaskits and reseat the trumpet base and plenum cover and it
    would all be cushty.

Well it was apart from a load of loose bolts BUT I got it all up and running again fine. Then before the celebratory test drive I thought "ah the ecu temp sender" - i heard they cause issues. I had one so thought 5 min job to replace it. Nah

the top part of the sender just spins and spins without showing any sign of ejecting from the inlet manifold. I couldn't see any easy way to get it out so I stripped it down again and removed
the inlet manifold, still cant see any easy way to remove it, so I went on ebay and bought another 2nd hand inlet manifold - which arrived this afternoon. Great except the ecu temp sender has exactly the same problem. I can get my finger on the sender part of it while turning the top and while the top turns I cant feel any movement in the bottom half. Is there a trick to these things?

If I do get either of them out and I plan to start on my original inlet first, I reckon on hacksawing the top plastic bit off and then drilling down through the sender until it is out

what are the chances that a helicoil is needed?

And if so what is the thread size please?

    Cheers

    On the plus size
having looked under rocker covers and into the camsaft there is very little sign of any crud nor wear to the cam - and it has done just over 122k miles. I had it since 46k and never had the engine apart. Somebody had before I got it as it had a composite inlet manifold gaskit and most of the inlet manifold bolts were barely finger tight.
Stags and Range Rover Classics - I must be a loony

You could try squeezing the cap tight with molegrips which may in turn grip the underlying brass of the sender enough to get it to start turning. failing that try to pry off the plastic cap to expose the metal part of the sender which you may be able to grip and get turning.
Just checked the sender in my 3.9 and it screws freely into an American UNF 1/2" Die. This may, or may not be the exact thread but it is close enough.
The senders out of other Rovers (25 etc) are the same thread and have brass formed hexagons instead of the plastic type you have. They are the same connector type so should work ok in your application, does on mine.
Regarding your eneven idling, have you checked and cleaned the IAVC idle valve, could be it is oiled/gunged up and not passing air properly.
    Rgds.
    John.
Your wife is right, size matters. 3.9RV8
