Has anyone managed to repaint the black centre of the ashtray and get a good result. Last time I tried the paint I used (a satin black spray paint) wasn't opaque enough and the chrome showed through. If so how did you do it?

Primer first. Then two top coats of satin black.

I did use a primer but it flowed off the tops of the chrome and then the satin did the same. Also the primer showed at the edges of the satin black. I'll be giving it another go but if not I notice Rimmers have NOS. Pricey though even in their winter sale.

Hi Ian, try Bilt Hamber etching primer, and only Bilt Hamber, several I've tried are a bit of a con, let it cure for the recommended time, then re-coat if necessary, then satin black. It works on anodised aluminium so should on chrome. Martin.

I took off what little remained of the black and then polished it to a high sheen, including the clocks. Looks pretty good.
