    Timing Chain and Sprocket question

    A friend of mine has recently sold his Stag although he did accrue a number of spares for it, one of which was a full timing chain, tensioner and Sprocket kit which I believe he purchased from Rimmers a few years ago.

    The chains are Rolon, as I believe are the tensioners with the sprockets being made by County.

    From previous posts it seems that Rolon chains are acceptable (albeit not as good as IWIS), although I did notice that the quality of aftermarket sprockets was put into question through recent posts.

    My question to you chaps is whether you would go ahead with the deal or is there a better supplier for the sprockets/tensioners etc.

    I did my chains in the summer before going off to Le Mans, I bought everything from Paddocks, chains are German but not IWIS, don't know what make the sprockets are though but looked and felt like good quality. I would buy the best to be honest even if the chain kit from your friend is cheap!!

      Copy of a previous post of mine on this subject

      "I happened to speak to someone at a famous Lutterworth based supplier tonight about something else and asked him for his thoughts on chains. His car (which he drives quite hard-his words) has the Rolon chains fitted and has had for the last 70k miles! Don't think I'll leave it that long to be honest Regular oil changes with good quality oil appears to be the secret. His view was that the chains are pretty similar and it's how you treat them that matters...."

        I have Rolon chains fitted which are just coming up to 40,000 miles and I have to say that I am becoming a little nervous

        The sprockets were renewed at the same time, I have no idea what make they are but they came from Paddocks.

          I think the issue with the sprockets was that the holes were incorrectly drilled on some, they were half a tooth out. That said, due to head skimming and BL's build quality it is a miracle if the cams are timed in correcetly with holes in the correct place.
          Rolon tensioners are about the only choice you have.

            But you can mix the new foot from the rolon tensioner and retain the original reynolds tensioner holder which i prefered the look of as it has slight differences .

              I heard the same thing from the same supplier oddly enough, and well my daily car is on 220k on the original chains although I do keep on top of the oil changes.

              Cheers for the advice and keep it coming . I figured it would be best to considering changing the chain and tensioners since I do not really know the history of my car bar coming across things as I proceed with it.

                  After any significant head skimming the holes in the sprockets are going to be in the wrong place so re-drilling will be necessary. unless you get lucky!Nick
