£150 for a pump is to much considering the kit is only £15, £75 for non exchange is a lot. I'd hunt around - what about some of salvage people? At the very least you could then swap one for a recon if you prefer.

Agreed, there's a brand new waterpump on eBay id 300232255040 at the moment.£120BIN, still a lot for a waterpump though even if it is new.

Well spotted Nick - although I'm wary of anything "new" after a failure of a "new" jackshaft and "new" hardness certificated pump after 1800miles....

Hearsay says a batch of "new" OE pumps were the start of the gear failure problems...

Well, yes I did mention what happened on another thread.

I brought the Stag as a runner but with little history as the old guy who owned it was 82. He had not kept detailed records of what had been done.
The engine was rebuilt some 10 years ago and it had a full body restore 15 years back.
The engine has since only covered 7,800 miles so I thought it should be pretty good the trouble is that most of the 8k miles were done straight after the rebuild and in the last 8 years it has done very little mileage, in fact some years it did none as the car was not even MOT'ed, but at least the 10 MOT's I have back the mileage up.
That said I checked it out and yes its no showroom car but seem fine enough to purchase and ran sweet as a nut. New MOT, just had to tax it.
It all went wrong on the way home I managed 72 miles before the top hose came off the thermostat hosing and lost all the water, luck for me I was some 500 yards from the services at junction 12 on the M1 so I coasted in switched off and went for a coffee and a bite to eat.
With no tools I brought a screw driver reconnected the hose and filled her up when she had cooled. All seemed OK so I set off again but only went 1 mile before the temp started to go up so I pulled over and called the RAC.
I was then flat bedded back home and put the Stag in the garage and there it still is. It seems the Water pump had gone and stripped it and the Jackshaft so hence the work, my guess is that when it was re-conditioned it had a replacement water pump, one with the case hardening issues and thats why its failed. The rotor looks almost new on the pump with no corrosion what so ever which would indicate low miles as well.

So there you have it 72 miles is my total journey time in the stag and I haven't even had the top down as it was driven home with the hard top on lol.

I know just how you feel.

I got my carlast year through the MOT and after 50 miles the same happened. Jackshaft and water pump, the same. Need left head rework valves and valve guides etc.

I bought the carwith the sole intention of learning and doing the work myself but had not expected the first job to be so big. Baptism by fire.

Still with the help of the guys on this forum, the car is back on the road now for a month and touch wood, seemsfine. Plus I am a lot wiser than 8 months ago.

          Good luck with your rebuild

My heart goes out to you both - sheer bad luck. I had the same myself but put it down to replacement parts - at least I've had a few years of fun beforehand.

All the people I've spoken to, including the suppliers have said the same thing - use original parts wherever possible. Having recently changed the timing chain and cogs after < 10k I agree - one replacement crank cog was a vague serration and I belive had jumped a tooth.

Don't lose heart tho, it does work eventually and £250 is less than a service on a modern motor....
