    diff extension

S5004598.jpgS5004599.jpgi bought a second hand diff extension to weld and modifiy, ive been all day welding and painting it,i left the old bearing is place while it was welded to minimise any chance of distortion, when going to replace the bearing ive seen the marks on the Quill shaft and socring on the inside of the extension shaft
is this unit only good for the bin now or can i use it

    thanks dave

Dave, pic 1 doesn't look too bad, you can fit the seal so that it makes contact with a clean part of the shaft by not pushing the new seal all the way home.
Not sure what I'm looking at with pic 2?

I may have a spare shaft in the garage, but it may be no better, will look tomorrow.

          Dave,
you can fit a double lip viton seal which will help and polish up the shaft with some fine emery also you can fit a speedy sleeve if that does not work. It does not look to bad from the picture not quite sure about the second pic looks like heat soaking.

          cheers Stuart

I bought a new lip seal that was slightly smaller on the bore, then got a machine shop to grind the shaft down to the smaller size. This removed the wear nicely.
The lip seal is nothing special, with plenty to choose the same outer diameter and width with different internal diameters, single and double lip etc.

Neither picture is clear so it's hard to tell. The quill shaft just looks polished to me similar to mine which I am currently rebuilding. If you cannot feel any groove it will be ok. On the extension piece, as long as the bore is still circular (i.e, not distorted from the heat) the lip seal OD should still provide a seal.

thanks for the replies, problem now sorted, today we fitted new oil seal in diff and replace the diff extension to modified one, while we were at it we open up the original diff extension to see what condition that one was in,not much difference, must be stag panicing again oh well only 425 things to worry about now
                dosen't diff oil smell

                thanks dave
