Oil filter housing - missing valve and spring?

Hi folks. Got a quick question about the metal bowl type oil filter housing which my spare engine has. (Not come across it before as the one in the car has a spin-on conversion).

When stripping down the spare engine, I took off the metal oil filter bowl and all that was inside was literally the filter element. I felt at the time that there was something missing. Recently I got hold of a copy of the original Stag parts catalogue and looking there, it seems that there should be a spring, washers and a valve assembly (see photos). This isn't shown on Rimmers website - I assume these bits should be present?

Absolutely. They're vital to hold the filter element tight against the oil filter housing.

    Cheers

Ps This is from the ROM - Pretty much the same as from the parts manualoil filter.jpg

Ah thanks Julian, I wonder how many miles this engine has done recirculating dirty oil then...

Next question - does anyone have any of these parts they'd be willing to sell? If not I've found that if you search rimmers for the part numbers directly I think I can get most bits and it will be cheaper than getting the spin on converter. I'm not trying to build up a high spec engine as its only for an EFI test bed.

Quite a number of people now use the spin on adaptor without problems. Does save a lot of messing about when renewing. Ever considered this option?

Hi Rod, yes I have. My real stag engine (as opposed to the spare I am building up) has the spin on conversion fitted. I even machined it to fit an inner retaining ring to make absolutely sure the inner O ring can't wriggle out of it's correct location and let unfiltered oil pass - a concern voiced by some a while back.

My spare stag engine is just a bit of an old knacker which I'm using to make a test bed for an EFI conversion I'm working on in slow time. It was originally seized and I've stripped it and rebuilt and it will be a good runner but I wouldn't want to use it for more than this without more major work (needs a new crankshaft as its a little loose and on its maximum oversize, has some scores in the bores plus quite a bit of wear there etc.). On this basis I'm trying to get it running without spending too much money on it. I looked for a conversion set but its not worth the expense for this engine.

If I am honest my oil seems cleaner with the spin on filter. OTOH the regular oil changes may have helped (I initially did them on a 3 month basis on two occasions, that has now become 6 months). I guess the bypass valve in the original filter may have been tired, but there are too many other factors involved.
