oil filter

have just cahnged oil and have removed filter, but i am unsure as to if filter set up is correct,i.e bowl
the part inside the bowl fell out, i have got it and cleaned but there seems no logic to which way its fitted ?
i have just removed the oil filter from a spare engine just to check (both AC) and it has a different set up inside . it makes the filter a spring fit if that makes sense

any ideas what is correct ?
have looked in manuals but its still not clear

I think what you are saying is the spring is pushing the filter out of the bowl, then yes that is correct, the idea is if the filter were to block then the oil pressure will push the filter against the spring and allow un filtered oil to circulate.

thanks for reply.have just spoken to Faversham Classics and it seems a part was missing ,so i am going to use my other filter bowl.
the spring was not pushing the filter up out of the bowl, there was a part missing !
