Deleted because the regulator was built into the later alternators - there will also be a can looking like the flasher relay lurking that controls the Ign warning light too
It is the alternator regulator.
If you were familiar with the alternator on Stags you have had before, you will see that the one you have now is shorter (it's an 11AC) because it does not have the functions of that box built into the back of the alternator.
If you do have the later alternator fitted anyway (the ACR type), that box has just been left in place by whoever removed the 11AC.
I make this added comment - because that is exactly what I did on my car when I fitted a modern Lucas marine alternator to my car when my 11AC died - the same size as the 11AC but with a lot more grunt and all the gubbins built into it. Not only does it still look original - but I had less hacking around of wiring to do by leaving that black box in place.
