    Local Stag owners

    Hi,

Ive mentioned before about this Stag with a Rover 3.5 unfinished conversion Ive taken on, and I wondered if anyone with a similar conversion lives anywhere local to the Ilford/Gants Hill area.
I'd like to take a look under the bonnet and take some pictures (even get some advice) if possible. The sooner I get it fired up the sooner I can start on the bodywork. Ive set myself the task of having it on the road all finished by May. (thats all my evenings and weekends taken care of, maybe even my marriage :-)))
I dont mind coming to you or if you dont mind, come to mine where there will be a hot tea waiting. My car is in the garage at the bottom of my garden were I'm restoring it.

Either reply to this thread or call/text me on 7860145142.

    Thanks in anticipation.

    Johnny

Hi Johnny. I am in the middle of rebuilding Stag that had a Rover V8 conversion in the early eighties. It was never finished back then but I am in the process of finishing the job now. Unfortunately I live at the other end of the country in Cumbria but I can get you pics of the engine bay and give you some tips of the problems, tricks I had to over come.
Mine wont be done by May.... (hopefully August next year is realistic) but the majority of the engine refit is done just let me know what you need to know!

      Hi Johnny;
I have the Rover 3.5 EFI engine I installed in my Stag. I can take photos of the engine bay for you, what area do you want to see?
1978 mk2 with Rover 4.2 V8 fuel injected, Datsun half shafts, rear disc brakes, Image 15" wheels.

        Hi Neil,
Thank you very much for the offer.

That would be really handy. The car I bought had the engine dropped in and the exhaust and prop connected, but nothing else
The Carbs are in but not connected to fuel line or throttle cable. None of the electrics are connected in the engine bay. nor is the clutch master cylinder connected.

I'd really like some good photos of the engine bay that I could use as a template.

        Thank you for your help.

        Johnny

Do you have the alternator and power steering mounted.... correctly with seperate pulleys?
Are you suing Su Carbs with shortened dash pots or do you have a four barrel carb

At the moment I am still playing with the cooling system.. I have the radiator mounted further forward and an electric fan mounted to push through from behind the front grill. I'll get some pics of that because that is still in the "doing stage" right now.

I created myself a problem as I wanted to keep the arrangement of the power steering Stag like and so had to mount the alternator on the Rover engine on the other side... pics to follow.

I have a four barrel inlet manifold and will be running a Holley carb with a new facet red top fuel pump mounted in the boot as standard and a Filter King filter / pressure regulator in the engine bay.... where that is to be mounted exactly has yet to be confirmed but there is a plan!
The engine electrics are pretty simple... lucas alternator standard built in regulator with three pin connection, I hope to be running Electronic ignition (have a plan to use the Dutch 123 system. Its loads of money but can be pre mapped and programmed to suit the engine configuration.) but a mate (who lives locally and works at the same place as me!) who also has a RV8 Stag is running standard points with normal ballast resistor coil and its wired basically using the standard Stag system although the wiring has been slightly modified to reach the new coil position. The starter motor wiring is the same as the Stag. (My mates car is running SU carbs with shortened dash pots. The power steering and alternator mounts are not ideal on his car but he wont mind me getting some pictures for you of his as well.)

            Which gearbox are you using?
You need to check that the front springs have been altered to suit the RV8 as well.

I will post some pictures on here over the weekend and then you can ask anything you want. Even if i cant answer there will be loads of other people who can and there may even be more discussion generated over the rights and wrongs of the way we do things!!

I was really looking for anything that shows the engine area clearly. so I could use as a template.
I was told by the seller that the engine in mine is a Rover SDI. I dont know what difference that might make
                Thanks for your help

Theres a lot of information there Neil. I think mosyt of it went over my head :-)
The carbs are in and I seem to remember being told something about them being modified. The alternator is there too.
The power steering pump is there but with no pipes and I havent seen any in the boxes of bits I was given either. This task just seems to get worst by the minute.
All the wires have had their ends cut off for some reason and the wiring charts seem to have different colours to the ones on the car. I'm not too bad with wiring though and I can test them and find out what is what.
I dont know what gearbox it has in it. All I do know is that it had some sort of conversion that lowered the engine so as it doesnt have to have the bonnet bulge. I can find out from the previous owner though.
I have two radiators amongst the bits given to me and I was told that one of them has been modified.

                        I must be mad...

Dont give up on it it is very sortable whatever stage it is at. In fact it might be better to have it like it is as that means you can do it right.

Leave it with me and I'll get some pictures and talk you through some other stuff.
Wiring is easy really just sounds complicated also check... is your original car a MK1 or 2? the wiring was quite a bit different and the colour coded one found mostly on here and on google is for a MK2. but I do have a black and white diagram for a MK1 in my owners manual.
It sounds like the worst of the mechanics is done for you... I'll put a picture on here now of how my engine bay looked the day I got the car 4 years ago...

And how it was a month or two ago. Its a bit different again now but I'll post those pictures over the weekend.... It just takes time and patience and blood sweat and tears with a good dollop of cash....
