    Ignition Wiring

Can anybody help me out with what colour wires should go to the coil? Also how is the ballast resistor set up?

While I'm at it, what colours should the wires be for the fuel pump.

My car is a 1972 but Ive got a feeling the wiring diagrams that I have downloaded are for the MK2 models because I cant find the wires they say should be there.

The previous owner decided to cut the ends of all the wires for some reason....

Fuel pump apears to be white/light green

    Coil -ve white/black, +ve white/orange

The ballast resistor (for 6v coil) should be connected to the white/orange from the coil +ve (which then goes on to connect to the starter motor) unless im also looking at athe wrong wiring diagram (which is possible) but as it has a ballast resistor in it rather than BR wire it should be MK1 if you go to http://www.grampianstags.net/StagManual.pdf the ROM is in PDF and the WD is on p492 and 493

From your previous post it seems that you have nothing connected at all from the loom to the engine. I assume the other stuff is still all connected... ie windscreen wiper motor horns and lights etc. You might not have the washer pump wired or even fitted.

I wouldnt try to connect anything up at this stage just identify and lable the wires.

Your alternator could well be different on the RV8. The MK1 Stag had an external regulator where your RV8 alternator should have an inbuilt system. That can be awkward to describe on here and you might need some on site help! (But its quite simple to sort out in reality)

      So...

Try to identify the easier things in groups...

I mean the starter motor would be fed from the same wires on the RV8 as the Stag and the starter is on the same side of the engine. And the loom connections are on the drivers side of the engine bay. (My Starter wiring circuit wires come out under the brake booster but that might not be standard) You have a BW35 gearbox which I assume is the original gearbox for your car and has not been transplanted from the SD1 with the engine and so the loom there will be almost identical. In fact you may have a loom on the box that connects straight into the multi plug on the stag loom. If that multi plug has been cut off let me know and I will try to describe the wiring diagram for you . That will sort out the starter inhibitor switch on the gearbox and then leave you with a large red white wire with a single spade... goes to the starter motor coil (not the main starter posts) and then there most likley will be a white Orange wire for the other side of the starter coil. Thre may be some other wires on that multi connector that need sorting out too. Reversing lights and redundant overdrive wiring.

Once you have these wires identified you can move on to the next part of the loom even if you dont know exactly which of those two terminals is which. You can sort that out later.

The oil pressure connection on the RV8 is on the oil pump at the bottom of the timing chain cover near the oil filter housing and the wire from the Stag loom is a Brown/white wire.

The Temp gauge sensor / switch on the RV8 engine is at the front of the inlet manifold somewhere and there should be a white / blue wire? (according to the MK1 wiring diag I have which might be wrong!) on the Stag loom.

The wires might be in the wrong place and so will need modifying to reach or be connected to their new connections

Then You should have a white / grey wire from your tacho to one side of the ballast resistor. The other side of the ballast resistor is white / orange (as Paul says) it feeds the +ve side of the coil and should also run back to the coil on the starter motor. (you will have identified the other end of that wire at the starter motor end.

Once you have most of the wires identified you can start to make the modifications that are needed to connect them to the RV8. I guess you are intending to do some of this work over the weekend? If you do and get into bother just post on here and I or others will try to help out.

As an aside how much other work is needed on your car? Do you have the inside electrics to sort out or is that still all ok? It will help later when you come to do your checks but I have a battery charger / starter that I have set up to connect to the battery terminals. This allows me to run each wiring circuit (I had the whole loom to re instate as well as modify the engine connections) from the ignition key as i need to test it even though the engine is not ready to start or run. This has allowed me to sort out and repair where required all the lighting circuits and the heater and fan etc..

I still have the connections to sort out but I have identified each cable on the engine, connected up the starter motor, and made a plan of where the ignition coil has to be and where the wiring comes from for that, where the distributor has to be etc to make the mods to the loom that are required.

All the best with your project and I'm sure we all look forward to you joining the forum as a member and posting you own pictures and then you can also get the benefit of us seeing your problems as well!... makes things a whole lot easier to help you fix them!

Thanks Paul and Neil for your input. Ive spent all day on the car and I really think this isnt one for me. I'm going to stick it up on ebay later tonight and just get rid of it.
I once read that its better to pay more for a running vehicle than something thats a cheap non runner when starting out a restoration project. I know this to be true an yet I didnt stick to it this time.

There are a million things that need to be sorted out on this car and the only thing enjoy doing its the bodywork and thats all ok (ish)
It needs someone who knows the cars and isnt frightened by the mechanical side and of course the RV8 modification.
Several years ago I used to own a BMW breakers yard specialising in the old 3 series. I got to these cars inside out. at one time I even bought 4 convertable bodyshells brand new from BMW and built four cars from scratch mainly using my own stock without a manual complete with wiring loom and everything. I dont say this to show off but rather to say this particualr project need a person that knows the Stag like I knew BMW's.
I know I'm a light weight but there comes a time when a man has to chuck the towel in and this is it I'm afraid
Not to say I wont have another go at a stag in the future but I will look for a runner that needs more bodywork than anything else.

No doublt I will still be tinkering with it until it sell's It's kind of what I enjoy doing, and with all that information I have been given, I half want to go back out to the garage right now and try again :-)
I think "her indoors" would lock me out this time though......
