Dave.... generaly we use UNF (unified national fine) as an imperial standard.. the 5/16 is the major diameter and the 24 is the threads per inch.
Usually in UNF threads the pitch is standardised.... but Some UNF threads, especially in the smaller sizes have varying pitches. So quite often for instance you will see 3/16 stated with its thread pitch rather than "UNF" because its where the thread pitch standard starts to go hay wire.
Some (especially USA stuff) engine parts come with a variety of UNF thread pitches which dont match any standard, for example some Holley carbs have a 9/16 UNF fine thread form....
So be careful when you buy a tap or die set... always try to buy High speed steel and avoid "High Carbon steel" (the cheap sets from Aldi are usualy high carbon steel.) and make sure you are getting the taps and dies you need.
Triumph cars use 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, and 1/2" fairly widely and the aluminium parts should have those threads in UNC (Unified National Coarse) by default. The fine threads are a lot weaker and therefore more likely to strip and get galled up in the softer alloys.
Out of interest, where do you buy all your SS nuts and bolts ?
Cheers
Julian
Hi Julian,
I have used this guy for all mine, very good service and for a small extra charge he will polish them and in the case of bolts sligthly dome the heads before polishing for a perfect finish. If you look at my albums (header tank) they are fitted to my carb elbows, bonnet hinges etc.
Polished stainless steel and zinc plated nuts, bolts, washers, screws, self tappers etc., based in Newark, UK. We try to have as much as possible for car and bike restoration.
