    Rear diff mounting and alignment

I'm replacing my rear diff mounting studs and wanted to ask the forum about the stags common problem of the rear wheels out of alignment. Ie one wheel sits out further inside the arch than another. Has anyone ever tried to correct this or would it throw one problem on to another.
I have the new studs in place but not welded yet. Many thanks to previous threads about about removing them they were a big help.
    All suggestions welcome

that sounds like the holes on the rear subframe arms, have gone elongated where it meets the dif extension houseing,i had the hole redrilled and a tube welded in on mine

Hi Dave. I'm not really talking about wear and tear I'm on about production faults I noticed a top show car on the soc stand had the same fault and told most stags have the same problem.I pointed it out to him and I didn't know he had never noticed it but agreed one wheel did stick out further than the other The question is can you shift the diff to the left or right to make up the difference. Once I rebuild it will be come clearer on how to shim up the whole unit.

Hi Edd, Dave Bower (DaveB) has done it, that's the man to talk to. Martin.

Cheers Martin I will look on his threads and pm if I don't find what I'm after.

My main worry is how adjustable is the rear geometry not many answers so I guess most folks bolt things back together and call it part of the stags quaint look

I wouldn't have thought the diff location would have much effect on the wheel location. That is more to do with subframe alignment and the holes where they bolt to the diff extension.

It is, of course, still important to get it in the right place!

            Cheers,
            Mike.

              Edd,
              Mine always sat about 1/2" to the nearside (wheel/wheel arch) until I refurbed the rear end. I replaced the rear suspension outer bushes (with new rubber) and diff rear mounts with voided blue poly; when re-fitting I just ensured that the gaps between the outer bushes and the body stayed the same each side as it was bolted up. Now the rear sits centrally and rear track is within limits (so I didn't need to adjust the shims); maybe just luck, maybe that the old bushes were well shot, or maybe it helped just taking time when raising and bolting up the suspension to check that it's central. Hope this helps;
              cheers

                Hi Edd,

You're doing a fantastic job but don't worry yourself too much

When I was refurbing my rear suspension, I found that the wheelbase on one side was over an inch more than the other side . A quick check on here showed that I wasn't alone and when I bolted it all up, I jiggled things around and got the difference to less than an inch

All seems ok now and I reckon I'm the only person who knows ! (until now !)

                Cheers

                Julian

                    Hello Edd,
thats what happens when you work to close tolerances I do the same all our alignments motor to pumps etc are within.002 and I make parts to, drives you nuts when you have to do other work. In regards to the brickwork try using lego bricks they are closer

                    cheers Stuart
