just blame the Health and Safety brigade for banning all the dodgy chemicals which are no longer allowed in the manufacture of rubber!
as Dave says, send them back to the supplier with a polite letter of complaint, you are very likely to get replacement items

You say that, but modern cars manage to do mega miles without hoses deteriorating within the year or perishing in front of your eyes, so I am not sure that is the only reason (perished top hose and cracking expansion hose just after a year anyone?).
Generally it is all too cheap and poor quality. Seems to be the same for plenty of other classics too. Suppliers always say people will not pay anymore but that is never the impession I get from people. If it is made of rubber these day forget it ! Julian - there are 2 of us on here far too early on a saturday morning! Think i should go back to sleep now!
There is some truth IME with the fact that people are not willing to pay for it. Take the coolant hoses. Whilst I admit £100 is quite a bit for hoses (Silicon items) bear in mind that an OE hose on a modern car will be around £30 minimum (on one of my moderns (a Ford as well!) it is more like £70!), yet owners expect a £30 hose set to be long lasting?
Fear not Gresley, it seems they will sell rubbish on moderns as well. I have just had to change an upper arm on my Alfa 147 after only a year and 18,000 miles of it being fitted and supplied by a garage! Hopefully the genuine/OE item may last a little longer (after all, I thought we were meant to drive the cars, not fix them constantly!). Even then the price difference was apparent (£30 vs. £70).
Anyway, it's clear skies here, so I should really be a little more cheerful on a Saturday morning .
I also have suffered from stag bits that might as well be made from butter.
On the whole though I avoid buying any car parts off eBay now unless they are from known and trusted bayers such is tony hart or robsport. Been bitten too many times with nasty fake crap. Branded original looking prop uj kits that last 2k miles before disintegrating anyone? Waste of my time and money.
p.s. my gearstick gator is also split and covered with duct tape. It lasted a year before it started to fall apart.
Stags and Range Rover Classics - I must be a loony
