    Keys and locks

I posted a couple of months ago about the stag I was buying that had been in a garage for 20 years
Well I have the engine and gearbox fully rebuilt and married
I have all the lifting gear for the engine install, the stands and as far as I can see I am ready to go collect the car
I pumped up the tyres for the first time in 20 years and 3 out of 4 have stayed up for 4 weeks one went down, but the spare was still inflated
All the wheels turn freely and I have transport lined up

The seller cannot find the keys, fortunately G/Box, doors and boot locks are all unlocked
Down side the steering lock is on!!

I am struggling to understand how many keys are lost,
I am told all the locks were with a single key
The bit I do not understand is if the Steering lock would have been the same key or a different key and if the steering lock was also the ignition
I also may need to find a new steering lock if I resort to removal, How easy will that be?

The big question will be to answer if it is possible buy new barrels for all the locks or even better to have a ket cut to suit the existing barrels

Please help me find some answers car is a 1975MK2 if that helps

    Thanks

    Hi
If its like mine the Ignition/Steering lock is a large key 2 sided the rest of keys are small keys FS series etc mine are all different have been changed over the years but my heritage certificate says all none ignition keys should be the same
Once you have built a ship everything else in life is easy

On mine the ignition, doors and petrol cap use the same key (although mine don't actually match) the glove box and boot keys are the FS type and you can find the number for these on the barrel if you take it apart which is easy to do.

Maybe you should change your user name to 'no ke'

Anyway, what Kevin describes is what was standard when they were new I.e. just two keys.

The steering lock is going to be your main problem as its fitted with shear bolts - The heads snap off after fitting. Not usually too hard to remove with a small chisel or punch and a hammer - unless a PO has cut a slot which can make it even easier.

        Cheers

          Forgive me
is the steering lock/key also the ignition switch/key? Or is there a separate ignition key swith in the dash

I did not really pay any attention when looking in the car and I am limited to how much time I get where the car is
I am keen to pick up the car for obvious reasons and have a couple of days this week to do so if I wish, the seller is still looking for the keys and I am just weighing up the cost/challenges

          saw this on Ebay

          I guess this is what
I will need to over come the steering lock

There isn't a seperate steering lock, its just like any other car, when you turn the wheel with the key out it locks.

Maybe if you remove the petrol cap a locksmith can cut a key for you, hopefully the locks all match.

My 1972 Car has seperate keys for door locks, which also covers petrol cap, small key for boot lock, plus ignition lock. I suspect from new, there was one key for all of the locks, plus a seperate for the boot (security you know!!). There is also a small key for the glovebox, that I suspect should match the boot...

As Kevin and Julian said above. The original set up was two keys. Large to operate ignition/steering lock, doors and petrol cap and a small (FS) key for the boot and glovebox.

Sadly matched sets have been unavailable for some time, so many Stags now have a mixed set . I can't see why this isn't sorted by one of the suppliers as I would have thought that there was a call for matched sets, especially after a restoration.

I have just the two keys which, I see from my Heritage certificate, are the same numbers that it was built with

Are there many others who are in this position or am I (for a change ) lucky ?

                  Cheers

My local locksmith did this for me for £10 cash for two keys although the actiul price was £16.00. I am going to try this route for the door locks as new locks are about £60 or more IIRC. But you cant do it for the steering lock because its not easy to remove the barrel.

                      Hi Julian,

I am in the same position, but the door locks had been changed before I bought the car. I managed to modify the door lock barrels to fit the (original) ignition/fuel cap key, so I only use 2 keys that match the build cert.
