ZF 4 speed auto gearbox

Has anyone had one of these fitted?

I recently took the plunge, partly brought about by a seriously knackered prop shaft, and bought one off Clive Tate.

The affect has been amazing. Haven't gone over 60mph yet but at 60 the revs are barely up to 2 1/2 k (previously this was closer to 4k). Keeping a close eye on fuel consumption and am happy to let everyone know once I have gone through a full tank. My daily drive is what a car sales person would describe as urban-combined and with the old gearbox I was at best getting 25mpg and more often than not around the 20 mpg mark.

My only slight concern is that there is a bit of a 'clunky' change down to first when slowing down/coming to a halt. Going to monitor it but it might require an adjustment. Any thoughts anyone?

My other question to those who have had one installed is have you changed the plastic gear selector surround as this becomes too small for the extra gear and selecting 'parked' requires a hefty shove to the front of the surround. Has anyone been clever and made a new one?

some have used the jag stick fitted backwards i will be fitting a bmw shifter .when i get around to fitting mine.
do you have measurements for the cooler pipes ??

hi the clunk might be that the kickdown cable needs slackening off slightly

Surely the shift should have been sorted when it was converted. I would go back to Clive he seems a reasonable chap. Mike

Clive fitted mine, retained original shifter and change is smooth, sounds like you need to adjust kickdown as Dean suggested.

The XJS shifter can also be made to fit off the XJS 3.6.

Saying that, I do plan to revert back to the stock changer on mine once I can make it a glitch free affair.
