    Separating exhaust pipes

    Hello

I'm trying to remove the engine on my 73 mk2.
I see that the exhaust needs to partially come out.
Does anyone have any tips on separating he pipes that slide into each other?
I need to separate at the point where the pipes go through the trailing arms in the back.

I was able to get the heads off without any drama so I guess I'm ahead of th game!!

    Thanks

    Joe

    Hi Joe
You dont really need that part of the exhaust off to remove the engine. Its really only the front pipes that get in the way.
As you already have the heads off then the only part you need to seperate is in to the front of the boxes..

      Hello

By the boxes I guess you mean muffler (silencer)?

Any advice on breaking the connection between
The pipe and the muffler? I know that the slip in
      Connections are hard to remove

      Thanks

        Hi Joe,

I recently had to drop off the front pipes on mine to change the gearbox crossmember rubbers, and found the usual methods of "persauding" exhaust pipes to part applied - tapping with hammers, heat, twisting and pulling got them off in the end. Drop them off from the manifold, unbolt the supports that hold them onto the gearbox crossmember, and you can start to get a little twisting action going that helps break the joints. Biggest issue I had was the studs into the manifolds which sheared, meaning thw manifolds had to come off to replace them. Since you are taking your engine out anyway that won't be such a big problem for you.
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

          Hello

          That suggestion worked out great.

Things are coming apart little by little

I hope to have the engine out by Christmas

          (my gift to myself)
