Hi Everyone. Just a first post as a past returning SOC member. I was last a member back in late 80's when I lived in the Kent area. Believe it or not I still own the very same 1972 K reg Mk1 Stag though it has been off the road since 1989 when I initially planned to restore her to former glory.
The car remained outside under a tarpaulin for nearly a year whilst I had a 20x20ft double garage built at rear of the house until I could finally move it into dry store and start a full strip down to an empty shell and investigate the level of corrosion from the lesser spotted tin worm.
At that time, I purchased numerous panels from various sources, Stuart SOC Spare, Rimmers, T D Fichett etc etc which included both front floor panels, out-riggers, pair of original outer sills, n/s inner sill, o/s front wing, inner wheel arch repairs, 2x door skins and door bottom repairs, 2x rear 3/4 wings, battery tray assembly, radiator support, top front panel. All these panels would now cost a small fortune at today's prices!
Bit of a long story really as due to kids, money and time limitations, followed by a bitter divorce the restoration stalled and the stripped down shell and components remained in the garage (that had now along with the house become my ex-wife's garage!). Eventually, my ex-wife demanded that I removed it all from "her" garage so I was "allowed" access to make good the drivers side floor, o/s inner and outer sill making it structurally strong enough and refit the front and rear suspension to make it into a rolling shell.
In 2006 the rolling shell and parts were trailered from Kent to the small single garage at my current home in Hemel where it has remained since. Space is limited so little or no work has continued as all the stripped components, panels etc have sat in the passenger tub or wherever I could find space. In the meantime I have been buying up bargain priced parts on eBay, auto-jumbles and sales as it is my full intention to save the old girl after our 31 year relationship.
I believe she's worth it as before being taken off the road, during the earlier years of ownership, I had spent a small fortune on an engine rebuild, recon gearbox, recon diff, rebuilt rear hubs and drive shaft assemblies, rebuilt prop shaft and recon power steering rack. So I know the drive train to be sound.
Reading Edd's resto project and other threads here has inspired me to continue with my quest to save another Stag from the graveyard. Watch this space! I'll post some old photos soon of before the strip down and during - and hopefully any progress once I get under way again.
Thanks for reading if you got this far.
Ray.
