    Thick skinned or bodge?

    Hey all, hoping for some help on the makeup of the front chasis leg if you can.
    I knew the nearside leg just behind the drag strut mounting was ropey, so attacked it this week in advance of pending MOT time, and discovered suspected tin rot as indicated on attached snaps.
    I'm not surprised and not overly concerned about the corrosion, after all it looks as if it will be easilly fixed, what does concern me is the second layer of rusty tin hidden by the surface skin. Is this a PO repair which has been plated over without removing the original rotten metal, or is the area intentionally double skinned?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    I'm afraid it's probably a PO bodge. I have recently done a repair to my rear chassis leg and spring hanger and the metal was thick (14 gauge/2mm?) but definitely only a single layer John. Looks reasonably messy in there (on my phone not PC) but hopefully not too tough a fix?

      It is supposed to be double skinned, lovely rust trap.
      If you look on my flying farmers new project thread, page three, you will see my chassis leg part way through the rebuild

        Sorry John, I stand corrected, which is good for my knowledge bank. So is the composition of the front chassis leg different to the rear Neil? I only remember thick single skin metal?

          when i repair mine again pass side it was double skined ,hope that helps

            Thankyou for the responses.
            Neil, brilliant, those pics are really helpfull,they indicate what to cut out and what to weld in very clearly. Your project looks great and appears to be coming along nicely.
            I'm impressed at the catalogue of pictures taken by yourself, Dasadrew and many others on the forum, which are shared with us, they form a great 'how to do' manual.

              Update, Job done, cleaned, replated and the cross member filled with waxoil then drained.

              Couldn't help feeling that appropriate plug welding would have been a much better job, structuraly as well as aestheticaly. Seam welding along the edge of flanges on that thickness of metal is a pain, especially on your back & under a car.

                I can only go by what I found on mine which was a single skin. It was made up of a l shape either side with a top hat on top.Very much like shown above. I don't see why they would have laminated two sections so wide and not just used a heavyweight gauge I used very heavy gauge on this any how. There is also a ready made oil hole for this section in the footwell it has a gromet over. Well mine does I'm interested if everyone has this gromet ? Mine has lots of wax in lots of places that's still working. I plug welded this to ensued the strength is on the middle of the lip you can also seam the edge but it might burn away and look a bit unsightly ( for the trailer boys lol )
