2 months idle fired up first time, however!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well gent's I have not been very active on the forum since the summer due to work commitments, and working abroad, but am home now for Xmas which is a boost.
On the up side the old girl had been idle for a number of months. Turned her over until the oil light was out and then pulled the ckoke out and she fired up after a few turns of the starter motor.Well chuffed!!! (-:.

However there is still a very strong smell of petrol in the cabin, although I can't seem to find a leak anywhere.
My question is this, where does the fuel line run along the length of the car,and does it travel inside the cockpit at any point, that I don't know about??? Yes daft question but am a bit perplexed as to why there is such a strong smell of fuel in the cockpit but not in the boot area.

    Hi Mike,

it's all outside the body tub, it runs under the nearside along with the brake line, you should see it if look under the car, check all the joints, i had a faint whiff in the car and traced it too a loose jubile clip in the engine bay, i only found it by the stain on the inner wing by chance, if you have blue tissue roll put a long piece the lenth of the pipe overnight, you will see the mark on that

    hope this helps

    Alan

    ps welcome back

pps and i have had a cracked filter on the welded joint, stupid me too much pressure

Hello Mike good to have you back, i am with Alan on this one, any smell of petrol that i have had in the past has always come from the engine bay, leaking fuel filter, inlet fuel lines to carbs both of these gave me a smell in the cab, fitted webers now so no longer a prob.
Keep searching Mike as some leaks only appear under pressure, good luck and have a nice Christmas...Steve

for some reason Mike i seem to remember a post on here, i think, about a rubber pipe at the bottom of the bulkhead as it runs upwards to the innerwing, i think, because of where it is it becomes very pourous and fragile?

hopefully someone will come along and confirm or deny it, trouble is unleaded more or less evaporates within seconds in the fresh air

best of luck and hope you get it sorted soon

Yes your right there Alan, mine sprung a leak while out on a run a couple of years ago and it came out at a good rate all over the exhaust.
The pipe had dried out and crumbled away when I inspected it.
So next time your down there people, its worth checking out lol

                  Hi Mike,

I think I know what they're talking about.

The fuel pipe under the car is metal but the pipe coming up the bulkhead to the fuel filter is plastic. They are connected by a short section of rubber which is what I think they're referring to.

This isn't the best of pics but it may give you some idea.

                  Cheers

                  Julian

Hi Mike I had the same problem earlier this year and it was where the fuel pipe joins the plastic pipe at the bottom of engine bay/bulkhead right next to exhaust! The connection is a rubber elbow which had corroded, difficult to see but easy fix.
