what does this mean please?

Hi all, i am removeing the oil pump tomorrow to replace the leaking "o" ring, at the same time I will check the pump for wear, in the Haynes manual it states for checking the end float" ensure the chamfered edge of the outer rota is at the driving end of the rotor pocket" the ROM does not mention this, can somebody explain it in simple terms please?

Guessing here, but I believe it is mean to prevent the scouring and snagging of any foreign matter particles which pass into the oil pump, a little like the way oil holes in the crank are "shelled" (relieved around the hole edge) to prevent any foreign matter snagging between bearing and crank.

The rotating end of the outer rota should have a chamfered edge, it is rotating and if it is a knife edge risks gouging or snagging if any dirt or foreign matter gets in there. The chamfer allows the passage of minor particles without this damage, I think ! perhaps another better advised engineer can pass judgement on it.

Basicly the outer moving part of the pump inards is a cylinder ,one end of the cylinder has a small chamfer taken off it ,make sure that chamfer is nearest the shaft that drives the pump.Just checked a spare to make sure and that how mine is ,if yours is correctly assembled in the first place all you have to do is keep it as it comes apart.

Thanks for this, after removing the steel 13mm nuts! holding the s/s exhaust to the maniifold, I got the pump and transfer housing off, somebody had bodged the seals with mastic instead of "o" rings, god bless previous owners! these have now been replaced so hopefully that will sort the leaks, the tolerances on the pump were fine, luckily I had ordered new brass nuts along with all the other bits so i can crack on with refitting
