New coolant hoses and pipes - don't fit!! And location to heater?

Hi all, just fitted new hoses and stainless water pipes - but the "U" shaped (i think bypass hose?) from the pump to the stainless pipe running from front to back of the engine doesn't seem to want to either grip or seal! On the original steel pipe there appears to have been a convex flange so the hose went over this and gripped, whereas the new stainless version is parallel. As such i can still move/spin the hose on the pipe. I've tried several sizes of jubilee clips but can't get a decent seal, am i missing something or have other people had issues with these replacement coolant fittings?Advice welcomed as to how i can resolve this one please!
I also have a couple of other question i need clearing up please if anyone can help. (1)The cars a mk1 with an original rad but also has a pressure cap fitted to the expansion bottle - WHY? (2) The "bypass" hose referred to earlier being fitted, was this a standard mod? Now heres the one! (3)The flexible hoses for my heater were connected together - thus bypassing the unit which having been repaired i now want to use. The Stag manual shows two coolant pipe layouts, with the inlet and outlet pipes thru the heater being reversed - i appear to have a bit of a hybrid under the bonnet so which way do i connect up? My gut feeling is the said leaky new stainless pipe's other flexi hose should go to the top heater pipe as per later models although the car is number 106 off the line. Thanks for sticking with my rambling!!
Thoughts on any of the above please gratefully recieved, cheers Gord

    Hi
I had that prob it turned out that the cheap hoses can vary in size.

Mine (MK 1) was a similar hybrid but with a Mk2 rad. The heater unit had alkso been bypassed. I assumed from the water damage on the inside that the matrix was leaking so took the whole thing apart and replaced the matrix and put new seal in the valve. However, it looks like the old matrix is actually ok, so it was probaly just the seal.
I'm not looking at concourse or striving for originality so committed to changing the whole car to Mk2 cooling system. I bought new hoses and stainless steel tubes, changed the viscous fan, fan etc and hooked up the heater according to the ROM. Had no problems with hose connections, apart from having weak hands . The only thing that confused me was the mk1 to mk2 spigot. It doesn't appear necessary, I tried all ways and it just seemed to make the fan eat the rad, so I left it out. Been running fine with a cooler temp on the gauge since.

Try using hose clips with a hex head screw then use a socket wrench to tighten. If the pressure cap is still on the rad then you dont need a pressure cap on the botlle (someone has fitted a Mk2 bottle in error. Note Mk1 is 13lb but Mk2 is 20lb). But then why mess around with the old 'suck it and see' system? Many owners have now fitted header tanks.

Confused Gord. If you have got the early radiator with a pressure cap fitted, you should have a simple overflow bottle with a plain cap. Perhaps someone has fitted a Mk 2 pressure bottle, in which case I reckon it could be used provided the pressure cap is replaced with the early non-pressure type. As for the heater hoses, it really doesn't matter which way round they go. The commonest seems to be the opposite to what is shown in the manual, as mine have always been. However, I fitted new hoses last month and thought I would try them the "Proper" way round, as it seemed logical to have the water supply going in via the heater valve rather than coming out through it. It is working fine, and I think I have convinced myself that it no longer gurgles when partly closed. If you get the properly reinforced rubber hoses that are made for the stag, you shouldn't get any leaks, even on a stainless steel pipe. Mike.

Can you suggest a supplier, Chris?

I fitted a header tank fairly recently off stagweber. Was a pretty straightforward fit (had to change one 90' elbow) its not the cheapest option but saves a lot of time fitting etc!

                      Gord,
use a bit of rubber glue on the stainless pipe the type that you use for putting on the rubber seals to the body like around the boot. then use the hex drive clips I have the same set up no problems.

                      cheers Stuart

Hi all, sorry for the delay with replies to you all - New Year started rather early!! Thanks to all who have offered their thoughts and advice. I always use the socket type jubilee clips but you can only load them so much - then they just 'jump' without the hose being successfully clamped. Will try another hose i think, i bought them as a set that long ago i honestly dont know whether or not they're reinforced, then take it from there. Thanks again and may i wish you all a "Happy New Year" cheers Gord
