    Rostyle Wheels

My #2 Stag (hopefully going for a MoT retest next week following a Christmas of welding and fitting new shocks and ball joints!) has steel wheel rims with "push in" trims that have 5 small nuts on them. Looks a bit tacky.....

I'm not convinced about wire wheels on a stag, but I do like the rostyles. Does anybody have details of what size I should look for?

Second silly question, this is a manual stag with overdrive. I've never had overdrive before (not even sure that it works), so do I put the clutch in when engaging/disengaging overdrive?

Finally, my last question for the start of 2013 - the temperature gauge reads permanently towards high (the engine is not overheating) and the voltmeter and clock doesn't work. Are these separate problems or likely to be related.

Here's to actually driving a Stag early in 2013.

Happy New Year to all Stag and wannabe stag owners, on the road or in the workshop!)

    Cheers

Do you mean Rostyles like this?

If so the MGB uses 14" Rostyles that may bolt right on (there may be a hub clearance issue) I can try one of my MGB Rostyles on the Stag if this what you're thinking of.. If you're referring to the Stag alloys their spec is:
    Manufacturer: GKN Bolt Pattern / Drilling: 4½" (114.3mm) Size Data: 5½J x 14" Backspace / Offset: 111mm / 28mm.

Overdrive does not require the clutch but it's generally a good idea to lift off the throttle slightly when engaging it. Inhibitor switches only allow it to operate in 3rd/4th. Overdrive 3rd is very similar to direct 4th so I find it of limited use except it's quicker to go from 3rd O/D to direct 3rd when overtaking than the 4th/3rd downshift.

Clocks never work! There a voltage stabliser attached to the back of the instruments (10V I think) that feeds some of the gauges. If it is faulty your gauges could be inaccurate.
    Regards

That's the one! If you get a chance to try an MGB one on a Stag it would be much appreciated.

      Cheers

Having a P5B you could always try a wheel from that? Better looking then the MG's and gives you the upgrade to 15" if not a P6

Only the fuel and Temp gauges are fed by the 10v regulator, so does your fuel gauge read high as well??
If so its the regulator, if not try a LD Parts temp sensor which reads vertical at 90 deg C.

I tried a Rostyle on the front of the Stag and it fits. The back should be no problem as the face is flat.
With a chrome trim and centre cap (and a decent non whitewall tyre) there really wouldn't be that much difference to the look IMHO.

Just a word of caution about using non standard wheels, MGB weighs in at about 2500lbs as I remember and the Stag at 2800ish. You will find that your insurer will think that you should advise him that the wheels are non standard, and will then very likely decide its worth a small premium.

Also in the event of an accident if anything can be attributed (even if only coincidentally !) to wheels that are non standard and are rated in weight for a smaller car you may find the insurance company reluctant to pay out, smashing chaps that they are. Just something to bear in mind.

Yeah but if we let insurance companies dictate our car hobby then we've lost. Might as well take the bus. It's like all the airport security we pay to put ourselves through. We've lost when we allow ourselves to be treated like cattle IMHO.

But the good news is that I've just had the retest and she's passed with no advisories!

                            Woo hoo!

                            A Happy New Year!

I keep my foot on the gas when engaging overdrive, especially in 3rd up blackstone bank by where I live, echo's off the walls!!! Sorry, where was I? Yes, I keep on the gas but off the throttle and I dip the clutch slightly when dis engaging.

It's good to go 3rd, 3rd overdrive, flick out of overdrive while changing into 4th then 4th overdrive.
