    Tubular exhaust manifolds opinions

I'm sorry I know this has been discussed before but I cannot find the threads that I want.

I am soon to rebuild my TV8 engine and have decided that the two things I really dislike with the original set-up are the possible water pump issues and the Stromberg carbs.
So in preparation I have bought Stagdads external water pump kit and a Holley carb kit.

I am thinking about tubular manifolds to finish off the mod and it seems that Rimmers and Robsport sell them.
Has anyone had any problems with fit etc and are they from the same supplier..

Also as I need to move the alternator to accomodate the ext water pump will the manifolds fit ok..

    Grateful for any advice..

    Sam

The first tubular manifolds on the market made it necessary to move the alternator to the other side of the engine - as long as you don't have air conditioning. However, the later ones run to similar lines as the original cast iron manifolds making the moving of the alternator not necessary. I do have tubular manifolds and prefer them to the cast iron jobs as they have a better flow of the gasses than the tortured journey through the cast iron originals. If you are taking the trouble to fit a Holley carb then I would think fitting tubular manifolds would be a good idea.

      Hi Sam,

I have been told the tubular manifolds allow a few more BHPs owing to the gasses not having to travel via the north pole to exhaust. I seem to recall the exhaust makers name being mentioned on Rimmers site, I'll take a look and report back if its still showing, all the best for the new year,

      Andrew.

        Hello again Sam,

Phoenix Exhausts, based in Cullompton, Devon...not a million miles from you....I remember buying a stainless pipe for my Cherokee from someone in Cullompton, what a beautiful noise from the old 6 cyl. Happy hunting Sam.

          Thanks for your input Rod..

Andrew, thanks for the info, and hope you are better soon..

Hi Sam,Obviously you dont want the old style tubular manifolds that require the altenator moving as the external pump needs to fit there.I think mine are Phoenix

            Cheers Steve

Thanks Steve,in your opinion do they need wrapping..

Not got mine wrapped ,no problems so far 4 years on.There must be some benifit in wrapping them though or they wouldn't make it.

                Cheers Steve

Be a little wary of exhuast wrapping. It will reduce radiated heat under the bonnet, but it can rot out the manifolds - even "stainless" ones, as not all "stainless" is born equal.
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

I wonder if they are cheaper direct from Devon, Rimmers have gone up since I last looked, might be worth asking ? The Cherokee s/s pipe (less cat) was only £190 five years back...

I stumbled across an ad for this the other day. It is supposedly an INTERNAL heat barrier for manifolds.

It sounds a bit too-good-to-be-true, but if it does what it says on the tin, it will reduce under bonnet temperatures without having the ugly wrapping on the nice shiny tubulars.

Anyone tried it? Too late for me, I am not taking my manifolds off to try it! (I haven't wrapped mine and have no overheating problems - standard cooling system, apart from a better rad. No elecrtic fan at all).

                        Rgds

                          Thanks dave,looks interesting doesnt it.
Although I wonder how that affects the flow of gases through the manifold which is part of the reason for the tubular manifold in the first place..

Does anyone know how much extra power the tubular manifolds give you,as my need isnt speed. It seems at lot of extra work and expense.

I am changing the carb set-up purely because I do not like the twin Strombergs not to gain more power although it would nice..

Like Dave I have never used wrapping or coating on my tubular manifolds and have no under bonnet heating problems. The amount of extra power tubular manifolds give you is up to debate, depending on other issues. There will be an improvement on power output but not a significant amount. Other exhaust issues would be if you using baffle silencers or straight through. Another personal issue I have with the Stag system is why Triumph took the right hand piping across the back of the diff just to have a parallel exit on the near side of the car? I have never had trouble with my Stombergs and usually people go for the Holley or a Weber for the extra power. Like all things there are pros and cons and you have to make your mind up as to what you want to go for.

I originally bought mine from Monarch and still have them - I did move the alternator using a Wards kit but not because I had to. They are not wrapped and to be honest if they were I think there would be an issue with the manifold clearing the steering column shaft, it is very close.
One thing I think is sensible (but i've not yet done) is to shield the electric cabling on the RHS of the bay as there is one heck of a lot of heat down there which does not mix well with unshielded plastic cables! I've replaced part of my loom in that area because of this.
Ialso have a Holley (from HRS) which together with the TM's does make a noticeable increase in power and flexibility but another important point here too is to fit the specially angled adaptor plate you get from Monarch, I had the normal flat one so the Holley was leaning back by 7 degrees and I never got it running anything like as well as it does now - you can compensate by adjusting the float balance on each side but far better the carb is level. Mine now runs so smoothly you can balance a coin on it.
I also recently fitted the HRS straight through center boxes - another useful gain and no more noise, if anything it seems quieter than with the original Rimmers SS boxes fitted 18 years ago.
If I was doing the job again I would get the complete kit from Monach (no connection just very impressed with the help, knowledge and price)
