    Capillary water temperature gauge?

My Stag temperature is still showing at 3/4 as normal. Have changed sender/gauge/stabaliser without affect.I don't want to fit the LD sensor as I'd rather know if there really is a problem,so nows the time to find the real water temperature methinks, but how do I do it?

Rimmers are selling a dual water/oil pressure capillary gauge which will replace my oil pressure gauge for about £65 - what is the experience of this - is it accurate? Are there any other alternatives recommended?

BTW - I stuffed a thermometer down the rad and it showed 88 deg C but an Infra red thermometer on the back of the LH head indicated 92 deg C hence my concerns.

    Hello Paul.

Your temperatures seem OK, the rear of the LH head will be hotter than the rad as it is a dead end. I think that Stags run around 90degrees. So it seems that your gauge is overreading. The reading of an IR thermometer depends on the material you are pointing it at.

As the system is pressurised it will not boil until well over 100 degress, I will leave the actual figure to the experts.

I like the idea of the dual gauge as there is just one to keep an eye on and providing both needles are in line, all is OK.

Hi John, thanks for comments. I must admit I was flumoxed by the higher temperature of head to rad - that sounds reasonable. I assume the other head will be the same?I still want to check the actual temp properly tho.

      Cheers

        Paul.

I think you will find the other head a bit lower as there is circulation from the back through the heater. I have an LD sensor which indicates as Stagnant says.

I like the sound of the modified sensor.... but my reasons are somewhat obscure. Abroad last year and a gaugenudging the red, then found a gasket had failed I'd rather know whats really happening than puta lower reading sender in.

I had the gauge starting to read higher than normal and bought 3 sender units from different suppliers ( Rimmers, Robsport and Paddocks)When a friend and I tested them by boiling antifreeze, inserting thesender into it suspended by a piece of wire and connected to the gauge. The heat was measured by a thermometer and the gauge read as the temp fell. All of them read different from 1/3 up the gauge to hot.
I then bought an L.D. parts one that was guaranteed to read vertical at 90 degrees and true to their word-no problem. Advise you buy one from L.D.Parts and see if you really have a problem.

Thanks Bob - 3 people say the same. Maybe I'm overworrying after last year and want to make sure its running fine beforeI commit to Italy next year! I'll give LD a try....

              Cheers
