    front strut gaiter replacement

    Evening all

Whilst continuing to dismantle the front suspension this evening I noticed that the gaiters have fallen apart on both front macpherson struts.

Whats your opinion on how important they are? Do I need to fit new gaiters or can I just forget about it?

I suppose it would make sense to replace them at the same time as I fit new lower suspension joints, track rod ends and anti roll bar ends. Ker-ching:shock::shock:

How easy a job is it? :shock:I presume I willrequire a set of spring compressors?

    Regards

Mine passed a couple of MOT's with the gaiters ripped so I assume it’s not a tested item. They stop dirt and grit etccollecting on the top of the shock absorber whichI imagine could eventually damage the top seal in the shocker and potentially causing it to leak.

If you're doing the suspension it's no big deal to remove the strut and replace the gaiter and yes, you'll need a good pair of spring compressors. Getting the top nut off can be fun. Trouble is once you've got the strut apart you then start looking at the condition of the top mount, the spring rubber seats etc etc. Ker-ching indeed!
