    Headlamp Adjusters

Wot's all this about then? I've got two different types of adjuster for main and spot headlamp bowls. Two bowls have the chunky plastic ones like Rimmers sell; two are spindly metal affairs with captive nuts and what have you. Have I got a Frankencar or was there a change sometime? Are spares for the metal type available? They're not interchangeable as the metal ones have a different thread to the plastic ones and the threaded bushings on the bowls are different.

    Hi Dasa.
I believe the plastic ones are the original design and any metal screws are an owner design. I have made stainless steel ones for mine. Same UNF threads for the adjuster and swapped the pivot point rivet for a stainless steel bolt and "aerotite" lock nut. (Retained the little rubber tube bit) I managed to get some stainless socket head cap screws the right thread and length so I can still adjust them without taking the grill to pieces.

I have some bowls with a metal adjuster in my spares pile.

I think they came from a Triumph Vitesse, I bought them cheap from an autojumble some years ago.

If they are metal adjusters the odds are that they predate the Stag as most things 1970 onwards are plastic, I think the TR5 adjusters are steel (1968)

Thanks for the replies chaps! The idea of self-made metal ones is quite appealing.

In the meantime I was scrutinising the famous parts manual and also the Rimmers site and they do indeed show exactly the metal type which I have. You can see what looks like a captive nut on the thread in the picture. This clips onto the chrome ring and is actually a nut which rotates in the clip and provides a hex-for-hex adjustment "click".

          Drew.

This may be irrelevant to your question but the headlamp you show is not from a Stag and not from a UK car, as the bulb is a dual filament with P45 base which was used on your side of the water.

Hi John, could be as I was just focussing on the adjuster screw pic (although the pic did actually come from the Stag Parts Handbook!)

The UK Stag pic shows the same metal type adjuster with locknut and captive (Spire type) nut.

Interesting, drawing of bowl etc is identical even down to wire layout, must be a generic Triumph / Lucas drawing used for all markets, at least the adjusters are common.
